101	Title:	Taylor Road Synagogue Records and Photographs, Series II

	Abstract:	Oheb Zedek Congregation (Taylor Road Synagogue) was founded in 1904. The congregation incorporated five other small to medium-sized Orthodox congregations in the early 1950s. The congregation was founded by Hungarian Jews who in 1905 purchased property at E. 38th and Scovill and began building a synagogue which was completed in September of that year. By 1915 the congregation operated a branch in Glenville near 107th and Superior for those members who had moved. A new synagogue was dedicated at Parkwood and Morison streets in Glenville in August of 1922, replacing the branch at 107th and Superior. Since approximately half the membership lived in Cleveland Heights by 1950, a branch was established there on Taylor Road. In 1952 Oheb Zedek merged with Chibas Jerusalem, located on Parkwood Drive in Glenville, to form the 500-member Taylor Road Synagogue. In 1953 the Parkwood property was sold and in 1955 the synagogue on Taylor Road was dedicated. During that two-year period from 1953 to 1955, Taylor Road Synagogue completed mergers with Agudath B'nai Israel Anshe Sfard (1953), Agudath Achim (1953), Shaaray Torah (1955), and Knesseth Israel (1955). The collection consists of records, photographs, and scrapbooks from the Taylor Road Synagogue.

102	Title:	Willett Street Cemetery Photographs

	Abstract:	Willett Street Cemetery is the oldest Jewish cemetery in the city of Cleveland, Ohio. It was founded in 1840 by the Israelitic Society of Cleveland, which merged with Anshe Chesed Congregation in 1845. Today the cemetery is administered jointly by Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple and the Temple-Tifereth Israel. Many of Cleveland's early German Jewish immigrants are buried in the cemetery. The collection consists of 22 black and white snapshots of graves at the cemetery.

103	Title:	Abe M. Luntz Papers

	Abstract:	Abe M. Luntz was a Cleveland and Canton, Ohio, businessman who ran Luntz Iron and Steel Company. Born in Akron, Ohio, of Polish Jewish immigrant parents, he was raised in Canton where he joined his father's scrap-metal business. Over the years the business expanded into a multi-state corporation. He married Fanny Teplansky in 1916, and in 1940 they moved to Cleveland. Luntz served as president of the Temple-Tifereth Israel in Cleveland from 1950-1960, and supported a wide assortment of civic, cultural, medical, religious, and benevolent groups in Canton and in Cleveland. The collection consists of newspaper clippings, correspondence, and family documents pertaining to Abe M. Luntz and his sons, Robert and William, who were also involved in numerous service organizations. Of particular note are materials pertaining to Abe Luntz's leadership, on the local and regional level, in the National Conference of Christians and Jews.

	Abstract:	Born in New York City, Herman D. Stein (1917-2009) was an educator, scholar, university administrator, and leader in a variety of professional associations. He studied at the Jewish Theological Seminary for four years, and then received a bachelor's degree in social science from the College of the City of New York in 1939. After earning both his master's and doctoral degrees at Columbia University, Stein taught at the Columbia University School of Social Work for fourteen years. He later was a professor at Smith College School of Social Work, Harvard School of Public Health, the University of Hawaii, and several other universities in the United States and around the world. Stein moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1964 to become Dean of School of Applied Social Sciences at Western Reserve University. He was named university provost in 1969 and vice president in 1970. Stein published extensively in his field. He was the author of several books and more than a hundred journal articles mainly in the fields of social work practice, social administration, international social work, and social work education. The collection consists of correspondence, minutes, memoranda, reports, studies, and other documents relating to Herman Stein's participation in a variety of professional organizations.

	Abstract:	Jack Herman (1922-1969) was a rabbi who served Anshe Emeth Synagogue, Youngstown, Ohio; Beth Israel Synagogue, Warren, Ohio; and Beth Am Congregation, Cleveland Heights, Ohio (1947-1969). He was a graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and later served on its Rabbinic Assembly. At Beth Am, a conservative congregation, Herman helped to grow the congregation from 300 to over 800 families. Following his death, Beth Am erected a new religious school in his memory. In addition to his work as a rabbi, Herman was also heavily involved in several Jewish organizations. He was an officer of the American Jewish Congress, chairman of the Cleveland Zionist Youth Commission, and president of the Cleveland Board of Rabbis (1967-death). He was also past president of the Northern Ohio Region of the Rabbinical Assembly, and a member of the board of the Jewish Community Federation, the Jewish Family Service, and the Jewish Community Center. Herman was also involved in compiling research materials on Cleveland Jewish history for the American Jewish History Project. The collection consists of several hundred note cards containing Rabbi Herman's notes for sermons, marriages, funerals, holidays, and other occasions.

106	Title:	Joseph Hays Family Papers

	Abstract:	Joseph Hays (1838-1916) was the son of Abraham and Bertha Hexter Hays of Storndorf, in the German state of Hesse Darmstadt. After Joseph's mother died in 1844, he and other family members immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, Abraham and Joseph arriving in 1856. Joseph Hays started as a peddler and eventually became involved in the clothing, scrap iron, and real estate business. He married Rosetta Schwarzenberg, and had five children. His daughter, Bertha, married Charles Eisenman, co-founder of Kastriner and Eisenman, later Kaynee Company, a clothing manufacturer. Eisenman was also a founder and first president of the Federation of Jewish Charities (later known as the Jewish Community Federation). Joseph Hays' sons, Louis and Eugene Hays, later purchased Kaynee Company from Eisenman. Louis Hays, who had served as a vice president and trustee of Mt. Sinai Hospital, was president of Kaynee at the time of his death in 1918. His son, Robert, was president of Kaynee from 1937 until 1954, when the company was sold. Robert Hays was also a founding member of Suburban Temple. Louis Hays' wife, Jessie Seligman Feiss, was the niece and adopted daughter of Julius Feiss, owner of Joseph and Feiss Company, which manufactured clothing. His son, Paul Louis Feiss, served as chairman of the company, beginning in 1925. He was also a founder and first president of Mt. Sinai Hospital. The collection consists of correspondence, legal documents, an autobiography, a family history, speeches, genealogies, and miscellaneous materials.

107	Title:	Eleanor Rosenfeld Gerson Family Papers

	Abstract:	Eleanor Rosenfeld Gerson continued her family's tradition of activism in Jewish and other educational, philanthropic, and social service organizations in Cleveland, Ohio. She served as a trustee and chairperson of the School on Magnolia, an alternative school, from 1973-1982. In 1985 the school was renamed the Eleanor Gerson School. Other organizations she was active in included the American Civil Liberties Union of Greater Cleveland, the Women's Community Foundation, the Jewish Family Service Association, the Jewish Community Federation, Mount Sinai Hospital, the Free Clinic of Greater Cleveland, the Heights Area Project, and the Cleveland Scholarship Program. Eleanor Rosenfeld married Benjamin Gerson in 1937, and had four children. She was the great-granddaughter of Edward Lazarus and Henrietta Wilmersdorfer Rosenfeld, who had immigrated to New York City from Uhlfeld, Germany in the mid-nineteenth century. Their son, Louis Rosenfeld, married Frederica Fatman, daughter of Joseph Fatman, in 1874. Joseph Fatman and his brother, Aaron, were owners of the firm of Fatman and Company, tobacco dealers. In December 1862, they were among the thirty Jewish merchants ordered out of Paducah, Kentucky, in the Department of the Tennessee by General U.S. Grant's Order Number 11. Eleanor Gerson's parents, Edward Lazarus and Bertha Rosenfeld, moved to Cleveland from New York City in 1925. Edward was an executive in his father-in-law Emanuel Rosenfeld's firm, Grabler Manufacturing Company. He was also active on the boards of many Jewish social service organizations. Bertha Rosenfeld was a founder of the Council of Jewish Women's Jewish Big Sister organization, and was active in other Jewish and women's groups. Bertha's parents, Emanuel and Lena Rosenfeld, came to Cleveland in the 1870s from Germany and were members of Temple Tifereth Israel. Lena Rosenfeld was an active member of the Cleveland Section, National Council of Jewish Women and The Temple's Women's Association. The collection consists of correspondence, legal and genealogical documents, diaries, account books, and newspaper and other clippings of the Rosenfeld, Fatman, and Gerson family members. Of particular interest to Civil War historians are contemporaneous documents relating to General Grant's Order Number 11 which expelled Jews from areas in the jurisdiction of the Department of the Tennessee.

	Abstract:	Myron Silverman was rabbi of the Suburban Temple, Beachwood, Ohio, a Reform Jewish congregation, from 1949-1975. After his ordination at Hebrew Union College in 1936, he held various pulpits around the country, and served as an Army chaplain during World War II. He came to Suburban Temple in 1949, one year after its founding. He was active in a number of groups, including the Citizens League of Cleveland, the American Jewish Committee, Fairhill Psychiatric Hospital, and the World Union of Progressive Judaism. He was national chairman of the Union of American Hebrew Congregation's Israel Commission, and president of the Cleveland Board of Rabbis. The collection consists of correspondence, sermons, prayers for special occasions, and talks relating to Silverman's roles at Suburban Temple, as well as materials relating to his participation in local and national organizations, particularly the Union of American Hebrew Congregation's Israel Commission.

	Abstract:	Albert M. Brown was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Russian Jewish immigrants. Brown became involved in social work in the Cleveland Jewish community, working at the Kinsman branch of the Council Educational Alliance from 1923-1929. After working at a New York City settlement house from 1930-1938, he returned to Cleveland and worked at the National Youth Administration and Bellefaire. In 1942, he became director of the Toledo Jewish Community Center. After returning to Cleveland in 1955, he served as executive director of the Community Temple (Beth Am) until 1963, when he was appointed the founding director of Council Gardens in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, a senior adult housing community. During his retirement, he worked part-time as the social director of his own residence, the Concord Apartments in Cleveland Heights. Brown wrote and produced many one-act plays. He was also authored The Camp Wise Story: 1907-1988, published in 1989. The collection consists of certificates, correspondence, programs, newspaper clippings, playscripts and other writings. Included is information concerning several Cleveland, Ohio, Jewish institutions, such as the Council Educational Alliance, the forerunner of the Jewish Community Center; Camp Wise; and Council Gardens.

	Abstract:	The Cleveland College of Jewish Studies is a non-denominational institution of higher Jewish learning supported by the Jewish community of Cleveland, Ohio. Accredited by the state of Ohio, degree programs in Judaic studies are offered, as are lifelong learning programs on Jewish topics for adults. In 1947, two Cleveland institutions founded in the 1920s, the Jewish Teachers Institute and the Beth Midrash L'Morim (Hebrew Teacher Training School), merged to form the Cleveland Institute of Jewish Studies, under the auspices of the Bureau of Jewish Education. In 1952, the Cleveland Institute of Jewish Studies became an independent agency. Through the initiative of Rebecca Aronson Brickner, the institute became known as the Cleveland College of Jewish Studies in 1963. It shared space with the Bureau of Jewish Education in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, before occupying its own building in Beachwood, Ohio. The collection consists of record books of the Cleveland Institute of Jewish Studies; yearbooks, newsletters, course offering catalogs, newspaper clippings, programs, and minutes of the Cleveland College of Jewish Studies; and reports, programs, and newspaper clippings about Jewish agencies in the Cleveland metropolitan area.

	Abstract:	The Jewish Orphan Asylum (also known as the Cleveland Jewish Orphan Home) was founded in 1868 with the mission to care for orphaned or abandoned children. The organization grew with community need, and was relocated to a campus in University Heights in 1938. The name of the organization changed to Orthodox Jewish Children's Home and merged with Bellefaire to become Bellefaire Jewish Children's Bureau. The Jewish Orphan Home Alumni Association (JOHAA) was founded in July, 1888 with open membership to all who had resided at the Orphan Home. The records, beginning in 1938, are a history of the founding and activities of the JOHAA. The collection consists of booklets, brochures, bulletins, a constitution, correspondence, a directory, Haggadah, a photo album, two black and white photographs, a program, a scrapbook, song sheets, and yearbooks.

	Abstract:	The B'nai B'rith Youth Organization, a youth service club, was introduced into Ohio in 1932, when a chapter was founded in Cleveland. As more chapters were founded the state was organized into two regions, Greater Ohio and Southern Ohio-Kentucky. The collection consists of office files of the Ohio B'nai B'rith Youth Organization, containing constitutions, correspondence, memos, publications, posters, and plans, including national information and records of local Cleveland B'nai B'rith Youth Organization chapters.

	Abstract:	Beth Israel - The West Temple was organized in 1954 to serve Reform Jews on the west side of Cleveland, Ohio. The West Side Jewish Center was organized as Bعnai Israel in 1910. It incorporated as the West Side Jewish Center in 1940. Originally an Orthodox congregation, it joined the Conservative movement in 1953. The two congregations merged as a Reform congregation in 1957 and occupy the building they financed together on Triskett Avenue. The collection consists of correspondence, minutes, constitutions, by-laws, articles of incorporation, the agreement for consolidation, financial records, membership lists, bulletins, directories, legal documents, brochures, programs, newspaper clippings, building records, cemetery records and miscellany relating to Beth Israel - The West Temple and to the West Side Jewish Center.

	Abstract:	Theodore M. Luntz was born on June 4, 1926 in Canton, Ohio, to Abe M. and Fanny Luntz, a prominent Jewish couple in the Canton community. He was one of five children. He attended University School and Yale University. He graduated from Yale in 1948. He served in the army during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1952. He married Idarose Schock on August 23, 1953. They had four children, Wanda Jean, Pamela, Brian, and Jill. Luntz began his career at Copperweld Steel in Warren, Ohio. After one year he joined his family's business, the Luntz Corporation, one of the United States' premiere scrap and steel brokerage firms. He rose through different positions including treasurer, executive vice president, and eventually became president in 1984. He went on to become chief executive officer and chairman of Luntz Corporation. He also served as president, treasurer, and director of Marquette Steel Company (a division of Luntz) and as vice president of 62 Land Inc. Ted, like his father Abe, was very active in the community, serving on the boards of many of the same organizations as his father. Some of these organizations include the Schnurmann House, Cathedral Latin School, Hawken School, National Conference of Christians and Jews, Montefiore Home, Boy Scouts, The Temple, and the Institute of Scrap Iron and Steel. He became a member of the board of trustees of Baldwin-Wallace College in 1979. He and his wife Idarose established both a scholarship fund and the Ted and Idarose Luntz Musical Theatre Fund, an endowment, for the benefit of Baldwin-Wallace students and the Musical Theatre Program. This continued the Luntz Family association with Baldwin Wallace started by Ted's father, Abe, who received an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Baldwin-Wallace in 1974. 	Abstract:	Morris Ullman (1835-1908) was a German Jew who emigrated to the United States in 1849. With his brother Emanuel and his cousin Leopold Einstein, he founded the Ullman, Einstein Company, a liquor business in Cleveland, Ohio. When it was dissolved in 1919, his son Monroe and grandson Rufus founded the Ullman and Einstein Realty Company. Rufus had previously served with the United States Army in World War I. The collection consists of correspondence, legal and financial papers, distillery formula books, receipts, certificates, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks.

	Abstract:	Samuel Neshkin (b. 1898) was a Russian Jew who immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1910 and became a tailor and clothing store owner. He is known predominantly for his involvement with the Yiddish Theater in Cleveland, which included acting, producing, and directing, and spanned approximately six decades. The collection consists of three scrapbooks containing handbills, newspaper clippings, photographs, programs, and other memorabilia, the bulk of which relate to the Yiddish theater in Cleveland and Neshkin's involvement with it.

	Abstract:	Manuel Levine (1881-1939) was a Russian Jew who immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1897 and became a lawyer and judge, rising to the position of Chief Justice of the Court of Appeals of Ohio. Levine was also interested in the preparation of the immigrant for citizenship and was president of the Cleveland Immigration League. The collection consists of correspondence, speeches by and about Levine, reports, legal documents, financial records such as receipts and bills of sale, photocopies of scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, and copies of miscellaneous newspaper clippings, most of which relate to Judge Levine's career or to developments in the legal profession during the 1920s and 1930s.

	Abstract:	Max Simon, the son of Abraham Simon, was the founder and president of the M & D Simon Company, a Cleveland, Ohio, clothing manufacturer. Simon was also a founder and first president of the Jewish Community Council of Cleveland (f. 1935), which merged into the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland in 1950. From 1956 to 1959 he served as president of the Federation. Throughout his career he was active in the civil rights movements in the United States and the Jewish community in Cleveland. The collection consists of reports and speeches by Max Simon, mostly pertaining to his activities in the Jewish community, and newspaper clippings about his life and accomplishments.

	Abstract:	Maury Feren was born in New York City in 1915 and came to Cleveland, Ohio, at the age of six. A graduate of Glenville High School, he first worked at his father's wholesale produce stand at the Northern Ohio Food Terminal. Following his marriage to Bess Nagelbush, he started his first business, M.B. Feren Produce. The business grew, and in 1951, Feren founded Feren Fruit Basket, a retail gift basket business. He sold both businesses to Fisher Foods in 1968. Feren and his wife then started Fruit Baskets by Maury in 1975; that business was sold in 1990. Feren appeared frequently on radio and television programs from the 1940s to the early 1990s to comment on food and good eating. He also lectured on food, physical fitness, and other topics at local colleges and universities. He volunteered for the American Heart Association, the Cleveland Jewish Welfare Fund, and Cleveland Golden Age Centers. The collection consists of announcements, articles, an autobiography, a booklet, catalogs, certificates, correspondence, newspaper clippings, a resume, a scrapbook, and scripts.
