Historical NoteThe Village and City of Middleburg Heights, Ohio, originally a part of Middleburg Township, was settled in the early 1800s. The township, village and city received their name from settlers who moved to the area from Middleburg, New York. By the 1840s Middleburg's population began to grow with the development of the railroad construction and quarry industries. In 1850 the neighboring community of Berea was incorporated as a village, which led to the division of Middleburg Township. In the 1920s Berea attempted to annex Middleburg, an action which ultimately led to the incorporation of Middleburg Heights as a village in 1927. Shortly after Middleburg Heights became a village a resolution was passed to build City Hall, which was erected in 1931. In 1961 Middleburg was incorporated as a city.
