Historical NoteBerea, a southwestern suburb of Cleveland, was originally part of Middleburg Township. Berea began as an experimental socialist Christian community, founded by John Baldwin (1799-1884) and others, called Lyceum Village. The post office was named Berea in 1836 and only eight years later the utopian community failed due to lack of membership. However in 1842 Baldwin had established the Baldwin Quarry Co., later consolidated into the Cleveland Stone Quarry Co., which ensured the growth of the area. In 1850 Berea was incorporated as a village, and in 1930 Berea was incorporated as a city. The Berea Children's Home was the first Methodist orphanage in the United States, founded in 1864. Berea is also home to the Baldwin Wallace College, The Cleveland Browns Training Camp and the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds.
