Summary NoteSummary: A scrapbook, consisting primarily of newspaper clippings (ca. 1840s and 1850s) detailing the role of the Beatty family in the development of Cambridge, Ohio, and Guernsey County during the early nineteenth century. Many clippings provide a firsthand account of Zaccheus Beatty's expedition to California as one of the original delegates of the Cambridge California Mining Company. The scrapbook also includes John Beatty's financial records, ca. 1790s.

Historical NoteThe Beatty family was one of the first families to settle in present day Cambridge, Guernsey County, Ohio. John Beatty emigrated to Cambridge from Loudoun County, Virginia in 1803. In 1809 he became Cambridge's first schoolmaster. His son, Zaccheus A. Beatty, was a landowner and was instrumental in settling Cadiz Township, Harrison County, Ohio. Many family members held local, state, and federal public offices. Zaccheus Beatty headed the formation of the Cambridge California Mining Company, organized in 1849.
