Historical NoteMax Kalish was a noted Cleveland, Ohio, sculptor. Born Max Kalichik in Lithuania, Kalish emigrated with his family to the United States in 1898. After receiving an Orthodox Jewish education he continued his art studies at the Cleveland Institute of Art, the National Academy of Design in New York, and L'Academie des Beaux Arts in Paris. A modernist, Kalish used labor and the industrial era as his subjects. His most famous statue, that of Abraham Lincoln, stands on the Mall in Cleveland.
