Includes articles on British & European history, customs, literature, language, music, science, natural history, antiquities, art, agriculture, etc.; "public papers" of the year; "miscellaneous" and "philosophical" papers; biographical sketches; poetry; book reviews (foreign and domestic); births, deaths, etc. -- Each volume has a "prefixed" background article by Kippis entitled, beginning with v.[2], "A short view of the state of knowlege, literature, and taste..."; v.2 covers 1714-1760 (v.1 had a different title and covered 1760-1780); v.3 covers "earliest times to the Norman Conquest;" the history is carried down to the reign of Charles I in the vol. for 1795 (v.[16]) -- Publisher varies slightly
