Summary NoteSummary: The publishers of the True Democrat, a Free Soil journal, J.C. Vaughan, Thomas Brown, George Bradburn, and Daniel L. King were suffering heavy financial losses and by the spring of 1853 all had withdrawn except J.C. Vaughan who got a group of Free Soilers to form a publishing association with J.C. Gray in charge. On Oct. 1, 1853, the True Democrat merged with the Forest City, another paper in poor financial straits. Cf. Clev. Leader, Mar. 28, 1884.
