His wife, Sally, started a Cleveland-based investment management company that represented a groundbreaking advance for women in that industry. Gries ancestor Simson Thorman arrived in the 1830s from Bavaria and became the city's first Jewish settler. Next, Kaufman Hays modernized Cleveland's clothing industry and saved the city from bankruptcy.
