| Summary Note | Summary: Consists of one document containing the names of the passengers on the S.S. Howard, the names of those left behind in Unsleben, and a prayer and a message to the group written by their teacher, Lazarus Kohn. This ethical testament implores the group of immigrants to remember their heritage, and not to abandon their religion in the new country. Fifteen individuals named in the document settled in Cleveland, Ohio.

| Historical Note | Moses Alsbacher, along with his wife Yetta and 17 other Jews from Unsleben, Bavaria, emigrated to the United States in 1839, arriving in New York City on July 12 of that year on board the ship S.S. Howard. From New York, Alsbacher and 14 other members of the group went to Cleveland, Ohio. Joining Simson Thorman and two other Unsleben men in Cleveland, this group became the nucleus of Cleveland's Jewish community.
