| Summary Note | Summary: This microfilm edition consists of Western Anti-slavery Society records from two collections in the Library of the Western Reserve Historical Society of Cleveland, Ohio. Included is MS. 554 Western Anti-slavery Society Minute Book, consisting of one bound volume containing the Society's Executive Committee meeting minutes, and the Society's Annual Reports, taken from the Anti-Slavery Bugle, for the years 1857-1864. Also included in this microfilm collection is a portion of MS. 1007 James Barnaby Papers which contain four bound notebooks and one loose sheet of paper of Western Anti-slavery Society materials. These include: lists of pledges made to the Society, 1846-1850; money collected June 17-18, 1846; cash accounts, 1846-1847; the Anti-slavery Bugle account book for 1845-1846; and the Anti-slavery Bugle subscription list. Materials in MS. 1007 James Barnaby Papers not relating to the Western Anti-slavery Society were not filmed and are not included in this microfilm edition.

| Historical Note | The Western Anti-slavery Society based its operation in the Ohio Western Reserve, but was active throughout the Old Northwest and frontier states. Organized in 1842 as the Ohio American Anti-Slavery Society, it affiliated with the national American Anti-Slavery Society. It published the Anti-slavery Bugle from 1845-1861 in New Lisbon, and later, Salem, Columbiana County, Ohio. James Barnaby was active in the Society, serving on the Executive Committee and sub-committees, particulary finance.
