Historical NoteThe McFarland family, led by Duncan McFarland, immigrated from Ireland in 1843. Duncan and his wife, Margaret, moved to Euclid Township, Ohio, along Euclid Creek in 1866. In 1867, McFarland opened a quarry along the east bank of Euclid Creek, mining local "bluestone" sandstone. The success of this industry led to the establishment of the Village of Bluestone. In 1871, two of his sons opened another bluestone quarry along the the west bank of Euclid Creek. The brothers sold their quarry to the Forest City Stone Company in 1875. As concrete replace bluestone as a paving material, the quarries closed. The post office of Bluestone closed in 1908. Bluestone was incorporated into the Village of South Euclid in 1917. Two of the McFarlands' children, Isabelle and Helen May, kept diaries during the years the quarries and the Village of Bluestone thrived.
