General NoteThe two journals, here printed for the first time, are from the original manuscripts discovered in 1913 and 1914 among the papers of the Biddle family and now preserved in the Library of Congress. The Lewis journal (p. [29]-76) is that of the trip from Pittsburgh to the camp on the River Dubois, August 30-December 12, 1803. Sergeant Ordway's journal (p. [77]-402) extends from May 14, 1804, to September 23, 1806.
