Since then, the group has performed the works of major Irish playwrights including Sean O'Casey ("Juno and the Paycock" and "The Plough and the Stars"), Brian Friel ("Philadelphia Here I Come!" and "Dancing at Lughnasa"), and Hugh Leonard ("Da"), as well as lesser known Irish and Irish-American authors. The group has performed in Pittsburgh, Detroit, Dayton and Marietta, Ohio, and traveled to Ireland in 1976, 1978, and 1980. He worked in public relations and as a writer, producer, and disc jockey for local radio. | | | Creator: | Cleveland Theater | | | Dates: | 1909-1939 | | | Abstract: | The Cleveland Theater was located at the northwest corner of St. Clair Avenue along the West 2nd Street alley in Cleveland, Ohio. Known as the city's melodrama theater, it operated under the management of Frank M. Drew in its first season, 1885. In 1886, H.R. Jacobs purchased the theater and changed the name to H.R. Jacobs Theater, but gave up the concern in the 1890s. It was then taken over by the Brady & Stair syndicate which restored the name Cleveland Theater and operated it as a variety show house. In 1910, the theater re-opened as a vaudeville and moving picture house. The theater was closed a few months later, and was then used for commercial purposes until it burned down in 1912. The theater operated from the parish hall at Pilgrim Congregational Church on West 14th Street. It was an artist-run organization that sought to provide paid work for local theater professionals. Working Theatre presented works that were new to American and Midwest audiences. Due to the resignations of two of the founders and financial issues, Working Theatre closed during its 1994-1995 season. In 1949 Luci developed for the Drama Department of the Jewish Community Center the Suitcase Theatre, comprised of men and women who took rehearsed readings to evening meetings, and the Matinee Players, a women's group serving the same function for daytime programs. She and her husband contributed monies toward establishing the Luci and Harry Wolpaw Playwrighting Fund in 1966 to award a major prize to authors and give a full performance of works for five winners over five years. The requirements for the pieces were that they be unproduced and concern American Jews.
