 Abstract:  John Harmon (b. 1789) settled in Portage County, Ohio, in 1806 with his family.. The collection consists primarily of correspondence, diaries (1807-1819), autobiographical writings, speeches, financial accounts, and land papers of John Harmon and of other members of his family. The papers relate primarily to the early settlement of Portage County, Ohio, and include election polls for various townships in the county (1808), a docket book (1818-1824), a list of subscribers to the Ohio Watchman (1835), and abstracts of Connecticut Land Company records as compiled by Orrin Harmon.

His daughter, Sue Wade Harman, served as a nurse for the American Red Cross Tuberculosis Commission in Italy (1918-1919). His sister, Charlotte Harman Charpentier, lived in Paris during World War I. The collection consists of correspondence of Ralph A. Harman and Charlotte H. Charpentier, letters from family and friends to Sue W. Harman, newspaper clippings and miscellany. Major topics include World War I and the American Red Cross.

 Abstract:  The Harmon family moved to Mantua, Portage County, Ohio from Suffield Connecticut, in 1799. Elias Harmon held several public offices and was land agent for many Connecticut residents. His son, Orrin, was active in the land business and was surveyor for Portage County and the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal. Julian Harmon was the son of Orrin. The collection contains the papers of Elias, Orrin, Julian and Martin Harmon. Includes correspondence, diaries, financial accounts and receipts, land deeds and memoranda of sales, legal documents, estate papers, powers of attorney, tax records, notebooks, surveys, and other papers, documenting their note collection and land agency business. Also, includes material on the Protection Life Insurance Co. of Hartford, the Franklin and Warren Railroad, the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal, the Independent Knights of Temperance, and the fur trade and anti-slavery movement, with references to state and national politics, banking policies, and anti-masonic movements.

 Abstract:  Donald McBride was a lawyer and businessman and son of John Harris McBride, owner of Root & McBride Company, a leading wholesale dry goods establishment in Cleveland, Ohio. Donald's brothers, Malcolm and Herbert, were officers in Root & McBride Company. His sister Grace was married to Dr. George Crile, and his sister Edith was married to Henry S. Sherman, chairman of Society for Savings, 1903-1936. Donald's wife, Mary Helen Harman McBride, was daughter of industrialist Ralph A. Harman, who ran Cleveland Forge and Iron Company, was a founder of Cleveland Trust Company, and a director of Cleveland Electric Railway Company. Mary Helen's sister Grace was married to Samuel Livingston Mather, and her sister Sue was married to diplomat John Pelenyi. Her great aunt, Grace Harman Wade, was married to Jeptha H. Wade. The collection consists of Harman and McBride family correspondence, genealogies, coats of arms, reminiscences, memorials, school reports, scrapbooks, ledgers, journals, diaries, newspaper clippings, obituaries, reprints, autograph book, receipts, verses, blueprints, speeches and photographs. Included are personal papers for Ralph A. Harman, Sue Wade Harman and John Pelenyi, Susan Fleming Wade, Donald McBride and Mary Helen McBride, as well as business records, recollections and scrapbooks of Ralph A. Harman relating to the early business, industrial and social history of Cleveland.
