| | | Creator: | Martin, Alexander Family | | | Dates: | 1927-1990 | | | Abstract: | The Alexander Martin family was a prominent African American family in Cleveland, Ohio. Alexander H. Martin Sr. graduated with a law degree from Western Reserve University in 1897, one of the first African Americans to do so. Martin had a long career as an attorney and was active in Cleveland city politics. His wife, Mary Brown Martin, was a teacher and the first African American to serve on the Cleveland Public School Board. Their son, Alexander H. Martin, Jr. was an attorney and the first African American to run for mayor of Cleveland. Their daughter, Lydia, was a librarian at Western Reserve University. Sarah Martin Pereira, another daughter, was noted for her scholarship and her commitment to education.
