1Title:  Lesbian-Gay Community Service Center of Greater Cleveland Records

 Abstract:  The Lesbian-Gay Community Service Center of Greater Cleveland (LGCSC) was opened in 1977 by the Gay Educational and Awareness Resource Foundation (Gear Foundation). The Gear Foundation was created to serve the Lesbian and Gay community of Cleveland, Ohio, through social, political, and cultural events, counseling and support groups, and to empower and raise the community's level of visibility. The Lesbian-Gay Community Service Center was opened to serve as a base of operations for the Gear Foundation's activities. The first Center was located on the city's east side, and over the years relocated several times. In 1988, The Gear Foundation officially changed its name to The Lesbian-Gay Community Service Center of Greater Cleveland. The Center has continued many of the Gear Foundation's activities while initiating many others, such as the Living Room Project to help support and nurture persons with AIDS. A Gay Youth Group has also been maintained by the Center, along with a Speakers Bureau and various entertainment and social events, including the yearly Lesbian-Gay Pride Day and march. In 2000, the Center was located at 1418 West 29th Street. The collection consists of board minutes, financial records, correspondence, memoranda, grants and funding files, Hotline records, annual reports, newsletters and other materials pertaining to events and issues with the Lesbian-Gay community of northeast Ohio.

 Abstract:  The Lesbian Gay Community Service Center of Greater Cleveland Oral History Collection began in 1995 in order to document gay and lesbian history in Cleveland. Interviews were conducted with members of the gay and lesbian community from 1995 to 2001 and in 2003. The collection was created by the Lesbian Gay Community Service Center of Greater Cleveland (LGCSC) and Stanley Garfinkel, Joan Organ, and Richard Van Patten. The collection consists of cassette tapes, compact discs (CDs), and transcripts of twenty-six oral history interviews. Of special note are a small number of personal papers relating to the lesbian and gay community in Cleveland that are also in the collection, including scripts for plays performed at the annual Women's Variety Show and a July 1982 copy of the zine Z-Trash.

 Abstract:  Gay Games 9 was the ninth iteration of the Gay Games, an international gathering for athletic competition hosted by and for people in the LGBTQ+ community. Launched in 1982 by Dr. Tom Waddell, the Gay Games are an international sporting event that occur every four years. The Gay Games represent a safe arena for all athletes, regardless of sexual orientation, religion, race, gender, nationality, or ability. The Games were held in Cleveland and Akron, Ohio, from August 9 - 16, 2014. This collection consists of advertisements, agendas, articles, budgets, cards, certificates, correspondence, directories, a DVD, ephemera, flash drives, a grant application, guides, flyers, handbooks, a license agreement, magazines, manuals, maps, a memorandum, newspaper clippings, programs, promotional materials, a proposal, and publications.

 Abstract:  The Gay Educational Awareness Resource Foundation (Gear Foundation) was created in 1974 in Cleveland, Ohio, to serve the Lesbian and Gay community through social, political, and cultural events, counseling and support groups, and to empower and raise the community's level of visibility. The Foundation incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1975, and was given tax exempt status in 1978. Early activities included a Gay Hotline-Switchboard and the publication of High Gear, a monthly newspaper covering news and events of interest in the Gay community. The Gear Foundation served as an umbrella organization for other groups and activities, including a Rap Group and a Speaker's Bureau. In 1977, the Foundation opened the Lesbian-Gay Community Services Center, to serve as a base of operations for its activities. Throughout the 1980s, the Foundation continued to increase its visibility and help form a cohesive Lesbian-Gay community in northeast Ohio. A stronger feminist element was nurtured in the organization with committees such as Lesbians in Gear Hanging Together (LIGHT). The Foundation also became more involved in political activism and lobbying, legal issues, job discrimination, and anti-Gay violence. The Foundation also was active in fundraising, social, and educational services in the fight against AIDS, including an AIDS Hotline. Other AIDS-related work included involvement with the medical community, the Health Issues Task Force, the National Gay Task Force, and the NAMES Project. In 1988, the Gear Foundation officially changed its name to the Lesbian-Gay Community Service Center of Greater Cleveland, which has continued many of the Foundation's activities. The collection consists of articles of incorporation, bylaws, board minutes, financial records, correspondence, memoranda, grants and funding files of the Foundation, and newsletters and other materials pertaining to general events and issues within the Lesbian-Gay community of northeast Ohio.

He has been instrumental in organizing campaigns focusing on the domestic partnership registry in Cleveland and Cleveland Heights (with Heights Families for Equality and Ask Cleveland), employment and housing discrimination against transgender people, adoption rights for LGBTQ parents, and marriage equality in Ohio. The collection consists of Ask Cleveland items including one t-shirt and one large outdoor banner used at events, newspaper clippings, correspondence, flyers, petitions, postcards, precinct binders, programs, publications, scripts and talking points for conversing with voters, volunteer manuals and training materials, volunteer phone bank lists, and voter lists.

 Abstract:  Aubrey Wertheim (1953-2003) was a noted playwright and gay rights activist in Cleveland, Ohio. Born Robert Wertheim in Sagamore Hills, Ohio, he moved to New York City in the late 1970s to pursue a performing arts career. Wertheim received numerous awards and honors for his plays. Wertheim was also involved with the National Gay Task Force in New York, and he developed support and empowerment programs for gay men. After returning to Cleveland in 1987, Wertheim continued to advocate for the lesbian and gay communities in greater Cleveland, specifically through his involvement with the Lesbian/Gay Community Service Center of Greater Cleveland. The collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, articles, speeches, photographs, programs, publications and newsletters, administrative documents, reports, memos, and proposals.
