The collection consists of photocopies of correspondence and miscellaneous documents, including naturalization papers, report cards, business agreements and recipes, all relating to the Marx, Strauss and Hawkins families. The collection is relevant to the study of 19th century American Jews, with special attention to their participation in the Civil War. Included is a letter to Edward Marx that refers to Lee's surrender and Lincoln's assassination. Ashley was a farmer and tanner. In 1822 he built what is now known as the Myra Seward Pitkin House, named for hs granddaughter. Myra Seward's father served in the Civil War and later settled in Middlebury, Ohio. The George F. Avery family resided in Brecksville, Ohio, from 1841-1907. His grandson, William Avery, served in the 177th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He married Rosaline Comstock in 1869, and operated a dairy farm in Brecksville. Nathaniel Gorgas served in the 104th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. The collection consists of original documents, including an autograph album, a diary, and an account book, collected by a descendent of the Ashley, Avery, Gorgas, and Seward families of northeastern Ohio. Genealogy material, reminiscences, and correspondence have been transcribed and copied by the collector. Included are the Civil War letters of Nathaniel Gorgas to his parents, transcribed by the collector of these papers. He returned to farming in Hinckley Township in 1865, and the following year, married Romelia Noragon. They raised two children, Oliver Richards and Margie Richards. In 1891, the Richards family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska. In the 1910s, Margie Richards became a physical education instructor at the University of California, Southern Branch (University of California, Los Angeles). He and his older brother Oliver served in the 52nd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. Jeremiah Mansfield participated in the Battles of Chickamauga and the Battle of Perrysville, and then served at Camp Sheridan in Nashville, Tennessee until the end of the war. He and Elizabeth Taggart Mansfield were married in Harrison County, Ohio in 1869. She was born in 1845 in Harrison County, Ohio, and received a teaching certificate in 1863. Her brother, Milton, attended Oberlin College and Michigan Law School. By 1880, Jeremiah and Elizabeth Mansfield had settled in Wells Township, Jefferson County, Ohio, where they farmed and raised five children. The collection consists of correspondence, essays, and miscellany relating to the Mansfield and Taggart families; Jefferson and Harrison counties, Ohio; the Civil War; and Oberlin College and Michigan Law School.
