Between 1940-1947 he worked as as a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), primarily in the Pittsburgh and Cleveland offices. In 1947, he was appointed Assistant Safety Director for the City of Cleveland. In 1949, he became Safety Director, a position he held until 1952. Following his retirement as Safety Director, he was employed in the transportation industry. NOTE: Researcher access to this collection is restricted. Born in Cincinnati, Fernberg received his law degree from the University of Cincinnati and came to Cleveland in the early 1920s. He defended several clients involved in the police bribery scandals of the 1930s. Fernberg was involved in the theater community as an officer in the Loyal Order of Greeters, Cleveland Lodge No. 1 throughout the 1920s. | | | Creator: | Ryan, Andrew A. | | | Dates: | 1899-1922 | | | Abstract: | Andrew A. Ryan, a police detective for the city of Cleveland, Ohio, was born in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, in 1872. He moved his family to Cleveland around 1897 and joined the Cleveland Police Department in 1899. As a detective, Ryan investigated crimes ranging from petty larceny to murder. His regular beat was in and around the west side immigrant neighborhoods of Cudell, Detroit Shoreway, Ohio City, Tremont, and downtown. Ryan spent over twenty years with the Cleveland Police Department. He died on August 21, 1930.
