Incorporated in 1858, the school was known as Willoughby Collegiate Institute until April 1868, when it became Willoughby College. The college operated under the auspices of the Erie Annual Conference of the Methodist-Episcopal Church, which built the co-educational Institute on the site of the former Willoughby Medical College on the Willoughby town square. It lapsed into a prep school in 1869, with college and high school students studying under the same roof until 1882, when the last college class graduated. The collection consists of a constitution, subscription lists, trustees' minutes, principals' reports, financial accounts, receipts, contracts, and correspondence relating to this college.
