Born in New York, he married Mary Bennet in Ashtabula County, Ohio in 1821. In 1826, he purchased land in Rockport Township from George Peak Jr. in what is now Rocky River, Ohio. In addition to farming, beginning in 1829 Giddings ran a wool carding business in Rockport Township.
