| | Abstract: | William N. Metzger (1919-1941) was a master model builder and aviation enthusiast. His collection of fine scale models of 1930s racing aircraft are preserved in the collections of the Western Reserve Historical Society's Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection in Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of portraits of aviation personalities and views of aircraft, most of which relate to the National Air Races held in Cleveland, Ohio, during the 1930s. Aviation personalities depicted include Hugo Eckener, Lee Miles, Milo Burcham, Benny Howard, Frank Hawks, Hugh Perry, John Livingston, Glenn Martin, Abbie Dill, James Doolittle, Julian Griffin, James Piersol, Al Williams, Ernest J. King, Eddie Rickenbacker, Roscoe Turner, Lowell Thomas, Jack Wright, and Charles Grant. Aircraft pictured includes the Ford Trimotor, the Lockheed Gamma, and the Laird-Turner Special. | |
