 Abstract:  Adelaide Rudolph (1858-1953) was a niece of President and Mrs. James A. Garfield who was a teacher and librarian at Columbia University. After her retirement, she worked on a history of Hiram, Ohio, at the Cleveland Public Library. Her father, Joseph Rudolph, was a soldier in Company A, 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the American Civil War. The collection consists of letters, a journal, genealogical data, and newspaper clippings of the Garfield and Rudolph families.

 Abstract:  John S. Ellen was a resident of Painesville, Ohio, who served in the 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War, from 1861 until he was discharged with the rank of first lieutenant on November 30, 1864. The collection consists of a journal containing brief, intermittent entries which comment on marches and troop movements, battles and skirmishes with Confederate forces, and the Union's military and political leadership, and Ellen's notes relating to the study of law.
