| | | Creator: | Legal Aid Society of Cleveland | | | Dates: | 1912-2005 | | | Abstract: | The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, Ohio, was founded in 1905 to provide pro bono legal assistance to Clevelanders who would not otherwise be able to afford it. In its first year, the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland served nearly 500 people; in 2009, it handled more than 11,000 cases, with a staff of 55 attorneys and a network of 1,400 volunteer lawyers. Major concerns for the Legal Aid Society during the first decade of the twenty-first century included the exploitation of low-income utility customers, and victims of predatory mortgage lending and fraudulent proprietary schools. It remains the fifth oldest legal aid society in the United States. The collection consists of annual reports, programs, and one DVD. | | | Call #: | MS 5286 | | | Extent: | 0.20 linear feet (1 container) | | | Subjects: | Legal assistance to the poor -- Ohio -- Cleveland | Legal Aid Society of Cleveland (Ohio) | Legal aid -- Ohio -- Cleveland
