 Abstract:  The Cleveland Jewish Singing Society was organized by a group of Cleveland, Ohio, businessmen in 1904 to promote the culture of Judaism by presenting traditional Jewish vocal music. Early directors were Charles DeHarrack, Julius Chajes, Maurice Goldman, and Reuben Caplin. Prominent soloists included Jan Peerce, Richard Tucker, Regina Resnick, and Eunice Podis. The Society disbanded in 1984. The collection consists of a constitution, by-laws, correspondence, lists, notes, program announcements, concert programs, bulletins, newsletters, and newspaper clippings.

 Abstract:  Frank Nowak (1888-1973) was a Polish tailor who immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1910 and later opened his own tailor shop. He was active in many Polish organizations, including the Polish National Choir and the Polish National Alliance, Group 458. The collection consists of minute books, correspondence, financial records, local anniversary publications and music relating to Polish-American groups in Cleveland, and papers relating to the Nowak family.

 Abstract:  The Krivan Slovak Singing Society was a choral society organized in Cleveland, Ohio's Slovak community in 1906. Dr. M. Francisci served as its director for some years. Members of the Krivan dissolved the organization between 1941-1955. The collection consists of minute books, membership rosters and addresses, dues payments, purchase orders, expense records, and a history of the club from 1906 to 1932.

6Title:  Swiss Singing Societies Records

 Abstract:  The Swiss Singing Societies consist of a male chorus, women's chorus, and a mixed chorus. In 1867, Swiss immigrants in Cleveland, Ohio, formed the male chorus Schwiezer Gesang Verien Gruetli Bund. In 1872, a mutual aid society, the Swiss Society (Schweizerischen Unterstuetzungs Verein) was formed by the chorus, and the chorus became known as the Gesang Club Gruetli. Later that year, the Gesang Club Gruetli merged with the Helvetia Maennerchor, another Swiss male chorus, to form the Schwiezer Maennerchor of Cleveland. Founders included Markus Knobel, Eduard Gisel, Franz Knobel, Jakob Bohner, Rudolf Knobel, and Arnold Wilhelm. Professor Jakob Keller was the first director/conductor. In 1902, the Schwiezer Maennerchor established a women's chorus. The group hosted a national Saengerfest three times; 1897, 1921, and 1956. The group was still in existence in 1995. The collection consists of minutes, account books and financial records, membership records, correspondence, newspaper clippings and publicity materials, musical scores, and programs.

 Abstract:  Louis Kaferle (1900-1985) was a resident of Cleveland, Ohio, who was active in the local Slovenian community. He was an officer of the Slovene National Benefit Society, a writer for the local Slovenian periodicals, and President of Cankarjeve Ustanove. The collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, and programs. Some materials document Kaferle's involvement with the North American Trust Company controversy.
