In 1850, Ives left Detroit, Michigan, for California and Oregon, but by 1855 was back in Michigan. In 1860, he traveled extensively throughout the United States and records of his observations are in one of these volumes. The collection consists of diaries containing meteorological observations, financial accounts, surveying notes, and other data relating to Butler's activities while surveying in Oregon and while traveling throughout the United States.
