He is known predominantly for his involvement with the Yiddish Theater in Cleveland, which included acting, producing, and directing, and spanned approximately six decades. | | | Creator: | Nashkin, Philip | | | Dates: | 1943-1982 | | | Abstract: | Philip (Fishel) Nashkin (1888-1981) was successful businessman and a popular Yiddish-speaking actor and monologist in the Cleveland, Ohio, area. In the early 1920s, Philip Nashkin founded the Nashkin Cloak Co., located on Superior Avenue in Cleveland. He closed the business when he retired in 1958. Nashkin began performing plays, monologues, and comedy routines in 1912. He became much sought-after for performances, both in Florida and in Cleveland. Most of his performances were in Yiddish. Nashkin was devoted to the Yiddish language, and he helped found the Yiddish Kultur Geselschaft (Yiddish Cultural Society) of Cleveland.
