His son, Samuel Jr. (1808-1884), was an Ohio state legislator. His grandson, Samuel E. (1844-1903), was also a Common Pleas Court Judge. Another grandson, James D. (1849-1935), was a minister. His great-grandsons, Frederick E. (1876-1944) and Arthur P. (1884-1973), were businessmen. The collection consists of the papers of the Williamson family, including business papers, deeds, a journal of James D. His wife, Julia Ann Root, was the daughter of Henry and Mary Root, early settlers in Sheffield Township, Lorain County. Norman's son, Richard Day, served as county auditor in 1861. The collection consists of correspondence, an account book, receipts, and memorabilia, including a history of Sheffield Township, Ohio. | | | Creator: | Spalding, Rufus Day Jr. Family | | | Dates: | 1790-1983 | | | Abstract: | Rufus Spalding Day, Jr. was a noted Cleveland, Ohio, attorney. A partner of the law firm Squire, Sanders, & Dempsey, he was also an assistant attorney general for Ohio, and was active in many legal and other organizations. He was descended from a family which included several noted lawyers and judges. His father, Rufus S. Day Sr., and his uncle, Luther Day, were founders of the Cleveland law firm Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue. Another uncle, William Day, was a federal judge, and a great uncle, Robert H. Day, served on the Ohio Supreme Court. His grandfather, William Rufus Day, was a justice of the United States Supreme Court. William Rufus Day was born in Ravenna, Ohio, attended the University of Michigan, was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1872, and practiced law in Canton, Ohio. He served as judge of the Court of Common Pleas 1886-1890 and was appointed assistant Secretary of State in 1897. As Secretary of State in the cabinet of President William A. McKinley, he negotiated the treaty that ended the Spanish-American War. He served as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court 1903-1922. The collection consists of correspondence, invitations, a diary, an account book, a scrapbook, biographical sketches, a notebook, articles, writings, addresses, obituaries, publications, and certificates.
