The collection consists of recollections relating to the Hale and Hammond families, early pioneers of Bath, Ohio, and especially to their religious habits and the Old Center Church.

2Title:  John Cushman Hale Papers

 Abstract:  John Cushman Hale (1831-1922) was the son of Aaron and Mary Kent Hale of Orford, New Hampshire. He came to Cleveland, Ohio, and taught in the public schools while studying law. In 1859 he married Carolina (Carrie) Sanborn and two years later was admitted to the Bar Association. He practiced law in Elyria before being elected Lorain County Prosecuting Attorney in 1863. He participated in the State Constitutional Convention of 1872 and served as Judge of the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas from 1877-1883. Afterwords, he returned to Cleveland to practice law. From 1892 to 1905 he was Judge of the Eighth District Circuit Court of Ohio. The collection consists of general family correspondence, primarily from John and Carrie Hale's brothers and sisters for the years 1859 to 1866. Also included are general correspondence to both Mr. and Mrs. Hale and a notice of election to John Hale.

 Abstract:  The Ritchie and Hale families were prominent in civic and philanthropic activities in Akron and Summit County, Ohio. Clara Belle Ritchie, daughter of Samuel J. and Sophronia Hale Ritchie, inherited the Hale farm from her uncle, Charles Oviatt Hale, and bequeathed it to the Western Reserve Historical Society when she died in the 1950s. The collection consists of Ritchie and Hale family correspondence, diaries, recollections, clippings, legal files, financial materials, and guest registers of the Hale farm.

 Abstract:  Jonathan Hale (1777-1854) was an early settler of Bath, Ohio. His grandson, Charles Oviatt Hale (1850-1938) became an Ohio state representative. The collection consists of correspondence, legal documents, financial papers, historical and biographical sketches, addresses, verse, newspaper clippings, account books, journals of pioneer life, and diaries, relating to Jonathan and Charles O. Hale and other members of the Hale family.

 Abstract:  Carolyn Hale Rodgers was a Cleveland, Ohio, native who attended Hathaway Brown School and authored several short plays and a children's book, "Pirate's Loot." She was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution in Pelham Manor, New York where she settled after attending Bennett School in Millbrook, New York. The collection consists of genealogical notes on the Hale and Welles family, a Hale family genealogy by James Buckingham, and a scrapbook on Carolyn Hale Rodgers' life.
