Jones served as a 2nd Lieutenant, 27th United States Colored Troops, a unit primarily composed of Ohio soldiers, from January 1864-September 1865. He was appointed 1st Lieutenant in September 1864, and in 1865 was appointed Assistant Adjutant General. The 27th USCT participated in the campaign that captured Fort Fisher and Wilmington, North Carolina. After the war, Jones returned to Cleveland, where he worked as a laborer, clerk, and sewer inspector. In 1870, he was appointed Assistant Marshal, Northern District of Ohio, 9th United States Census. He was a charter member of the Grand Army of the Republic, Forest City Post Number 556. The regiment consisted of six companies with one gun each. It was sent to Camp McClellan, at Marietta, at the outbreak of the American Civil War and split up. Two companies saw action at Philippi while four were sent to Grafton. They rejoined for the battle at Laurel Hill and mustered out of state service on July 26, 1861. The full regiment entered United States service on September 3, 1861 at Camp Dennison, where it was organized into twelve light batteries. As each battery was filled and equipped it was sent separately into the field, resulting in 12 individual battery histories. In 1833 Datus, with brother Irad, began to purchase land near Sandusky, Ohio, on Cunninghma's Island. The island was later renamed Kelly's Island. The Kelley Island Literary Society was established pursuant to the building of Kelley Hall, a hall Datus Kelley built. On December 22, 1860 the Literary Society published its first edition of the Islander. Anyone who wished to join the literary society was welcome, including women. The collection consists of issues of a manuscript newspaper published on Kelleys Island, in Sandusky Bay, Erie County, Ohio, by the Kellys Island Literary Society. The journal was "devoted to the discussion of questions in the Arts and Sciences, Agriculture and Manufactures, Politics and Morality." Prepared and written during the winter months, issues were read before weekly gatherings of inhabitants of the isolated island.
