 Abstract:  Rudolph M. Rosenthal (1906-1979) was a Cleveland, Ohio-born Rabbi of Congregation B'nai Jeshurun (Temple on the Heights). Ordained in 1932, he lead the congregation from 1933 to 1976 and was active in many civic and religious organizations, including the Cleveland Mayor's Committee to Combat Juvenile Delinquency, the Cleveland Crime Commission, the Wilberforce University Foundation, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the National Conference of Christians and Jews. The collection consists of correspondence, letters to the editor, manuscript drafts, article: "The Creative Challenge of Aging," addresses, sermons, 1959 appointment calendar, invitations, programs, certificates, awards, memorabilia, clippings, family correspondence, and programs, certificates and clippings of Mrs. Bertha Rosenthal, and records pertaining to the Cleveland Crime Commission and Heights Temple, including the Newsletter, Tidings.

 Abstract:  Rudolph M. Rosenthal (1906-1979) was the Rabbi of the Temple on the Heights (B'nai Jeshurun Congregation) in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, from 1933 to 1976. Rabbi Rosenthal was active in civic and educational organizations, and in civil rights and Zionist organizations such as the Wilberforce University Foundation, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Zionist Organization of America. The collection consists of correspondence, manuscript drafts, addresses and sermons, memorabilia, and synagogue records. Correspondents include the Wilberforce University Foundation and Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, on the topics of civil rights and Zionism.

 Abstract:  Saul Meisels served as cantor of B'nai Jeshurun Congregation (Temple on the Heights), Cleveland Heights, Ohio, from 1942-1979, and was considered one of the foremost interpreters of Yiddish song in the United States. He attended New York University and received formal vocal training at Julliard School of Music. He served as president of the Cantors Assembly, was a member of the Board of Governors of the Jewish Theological Seminary, and was a founder of the Jewish Liturgical Society and the Israel Music Association. In 1965, in Israel, he headed the first International Conference of Jewish Sacred Music. Through commissions and performances, he encouraged the writing of new compositions for the synagogue. His wife, Ida Ruth Moskowitz Meisels, was a musician and composer of Jewish and Hebrew songs and cantorial recitatives for solo voice, piano, and chorus. She and Saul Meisels were married in 1935. Following their move to Cleveland, Ohio, she studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music and served for more than twenty years as director of music for both the Cleveland Hebrew Schools and the United Jewish Religious Schools. The collection consists of awards and honors, biographical materials, newspaper clippings, correspondence, catalogues of concert and synagogue arrangements, and programs of musical services and festivals.

5Title:  B'nai Jeshurun Congregation Records

 Abstract:  B'nai Jeshurun Congregation, one of the largest Conservative synagogues in the United States, was established in 1866 by Jewish Hungarian immigrants as an Orthodox synagogue in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1884, a vacated synagogue building on Eagle Street in Cleveland housed the congregation. Buildings on Scoville Avenue and East 55th Street were home to the congregation from 1906-1926, when the congregation moved to Mayfield and Lee Roads, Cleveland Heights, Ohio. In 1980 B'nai Jeshurun moved to Fairmount Boulevard, Pepper Pike, Ohio. A gradual shift from the Orthodox to Conservative movement began under the first rabbi, Sigmond Dreschler. Over the years, portions of the congregation broke away over the issue of liberalization of religious practices and formed new congregations, including Oheb Zedek in 1904 and Beth Am in 1933. Rabbi Rudolph M. Rosenthal served the then firmly Conservative congregation from 1933-1976. The collection consists of minutes, bulletins, correspondence, newspaper articles, membership lists, committee reports, and anniversary displays.
