	Abstract:	John S. Ellen was a resident of Painesville, Ohio, who served in the 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War, from 1861 until he was discharged with the rank of first lieutenant on November 30, 1864. The collection consists of a journal containing brief, intermittent entries which comment on marches and troop movements, battles and skirmishes with Confederate forces, and the Union's military and political leadership, and Ellen's notes relating to the study of law.

	Abstract:	Charles Ransley Green (1845-1915) was a soldier from Milan, Ohio, who served with the 101st Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. Afterwards he corresponded with members of his regiment and collected their recollections and biographical data. The collection consists of correspondence of members of the 101st Ohio Volunteer Infantry concerning their Civil War recollections, pension requests, and biographical sketches. Also included are letters from Green requesting biographical and military data, and letters from his cousins Isaac and Julia Haskins, and others.

	Abstract:	James Nesbitt and Isaac P.C. Raub served with the 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War and fought at Perryville, Milton, Chickamauga, Tullahoma and Atlanta. They carried on a lively correspondence with family and friends before and during the war, and after they mustered out on June 3, 1865. The collection consists of typed transcriptions of correspondence of the Nesbitt and Raub families.

The collection consists of typewritten transcripts of correspondence from Covert to his wife and family during the Civil War.

	Abstract:	David Auld (b. 1844) was a Columbus, Ohio, native who was a drummer during the American Civil War. He served with the Twentieth Ohio Infantry and the Forty-Third Ohio Infantry and participated in Sherman's march through Georgia. Auld was a photographer and artist during his service, selling battle photographs and drawings to newspapers and journals and fellow soldiers. The collection consists of letters from David to his family, particularly his father, during the American Civil War and several letters to David from his wife and cousin.

The collection pertains primarily to a soldier's life and military experiences during the Civil War, with respect to forced marches, battle accounts and living conditions, as well as King's ambitions for an Army career.

28	Title:	Aquila Wiley Papers

	Abstract:	Aquila Wiley (b. 1834 or 1835) was a colonel of the 41st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry at the Battle of Missionary Ridge (1863) during the American Civil War. Wiley was appointed commandant of Camp Cleveland in 1864, where he oversaw the rendezvous and training of several new infantry regiments, and as a Major became the chief mustering officer at Cleveland, where he administered the discharge of some 11,654 Union troops. Wiley later practiced law in Wooster, Ohio and served 1 term as probate judge in Wayne County. He was nominated for Congress in 1878, and was opposed by William McKinley. The collection consists of correspondence, bounty claims, muster rolls, invoices, and returns, mostly pertaining to Wiley's activities in the 41st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, 1861-1865. Includes articles and speeches on Civil War topics; lists of voters and their political affiliations in Wayne Co., Ohio, in the 1890s; and correspondence and maps (1893-1901) relating to the Ohio Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Park Commission.

The collection consists of correspondence, history, notes, and other papers, relating to Barnett's service with the 1st Ohio Light Artillery in Tennessee during the Civil War; diaries (1862-1865) of Philander B. Gardner, of Berea, Ohio, Addison F. Stockham, of Hambden Ohio, and Newton D. Strong, of Strongsville, Ohio, members of Barnett's regiment; correspondence relating to the Dept. of Ohio, Grand Army of the Republic; correspondence and other papers (1878-1899) relating to the Bethel Associated Charities, particularly Bethel Union Relief Dept.; and correspondence, statements, and annual reports (1890-1895) of the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railway Company.

	Abstract:	Benjamin F. Sells (b. 1824) was a Coshocton, Ohio, soldier who served with the 122nd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. The collection consists of correspondence, ordnance returns, military orders, autobiographical sketch, and papers relating to the court-martial of Sells, who was dismissed from the service for criticizing the war and the President and for vigorously supporting the candidacy of Clement L. Vallandigham for Governor of Ohio in 1863. Also includes an essay on the Mexican War.

His wife, Louisa Johnson Smith (1847-1932), was a humanitarian and civic leader in Cleveland. The collection consists of correspondence, muster rolls, general and special orders, reports of ordnance stores, returns, affidavits from the court-martial of John W. Mercer, legal documents about land purchases in Kansas, minutes of reunions of Fuller's Ohio Brigade, the Society of the Tennessee, and the Loyal Legion, speeches and miscellaneous notes and papers used in writing The History of Fuller's Ohio Brigade, and other military papers of Charles H. 	Abstract:	Warren Lane was a Berea, Ohio, farmer and storekeeper. His son, Charles F., was Mayor of Berea (1900-1902) and an Ohio state representative (1904-1905). In 1878 Charles married Delia, the daughter of James Wheller, a shoemaker in Cuyahoga and Lorain counties. The collection consists of correspondence, legal and financial documents, diaries, account books, newspaper clippings, verse, and essays of members of the Lane and Wheller families.

Merrick was a resident of North Eaton, Ohio, who served first as principal musician and then as hospital steward in Company H, 8th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. The regiment saw much military action in Virginia. The collection consists of letters (1861-1864), mounted in 3 scrapbooks, written by Merrick, to his wife, giving a detailed account of Merrick's activities and those of his regiment; pocket diary (1862); medical notes, financial accounts, lists of office furniture, medicines, and books; personal correspondence (1885-1901) of Richard L. 	Abstract:	William McKinley (1843-1901) was the 25th president of the United States. He was shot on 6 September, 1901 and died eight days later. During the American Civil War he was Commissary Sergeant with the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. His brother-in-law, Andrew J. Duncan also served during the Civil War. The collection consists of photographs, general correspondence, family papers, financial papers, Civil War records of McKinley and A. J. Duncan, and letters of condolence and other material relating to McKinley's death in 1901.

	Abstract:	William Weisheimer was a German immigrant who settled in Cleveland, Ohio. His daughter Marie married Harry A. Spencer, the son of Dr. George Spencer of the Cleveland Homeopathic Medical College. John G. Eberhard served in Company H of the 20th United States Infantry Regiment during the Spanish-American War. The collection consists of certificates and letters from Germany addressed to William Weisheimer; autograph albums, school notebooks and attendance registers, and United States travel diaries of Marie Weisheimer; letters to Marie Weisheimer from John Eberhard while he was stationed in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War; letters to Harry Spencer (primarily from his father, Dr. George Spencer); and a scrapbook containing copies of articles by Dr. Spencer, and his chemistry notes.

	Abstract:	George P. Metcalf (born 1844) was a Liverpool, Ohio, native who served in Company D, 136th Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. During 1869 he practiced law in Mississippi, where he had a strong interest in the attitudes and actions of residents of this state toward Reconstruction.. The collection consists of reminiscences of Metcalf's childhood on a Medina County, Ohio, farm, his student days in Oberlin, and primarily his service during the Civil War, and his experiences as a lawyer in Mississippi during Reconstruction.

	Abstract:	Carlos Parsons Lyman (b. 1838) was a private in the 6th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry and later Captain in the 100th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry during the American Civil War. His family resided in Mesopotamia, Ohio. The letters and diaries provide a detailed record of his activities while at Camp Dennison and Camp Chase in Ohio (1861-1862), in Virginia and Washington, D. C. (1862-1864), and in Tennessee and Missouri (1864-1865). The collection consists of letters and diaries of Carlos Lyman written during the Civil War, an autobiographical sketch, an 1859 diary, and family papers, including agreement and land deeds, certificates, financial receipts and newspaper clippings.

Hodges and General George McGinnis concerning events at Vicksburg and Shiloh (1887), and three typed articles: "General Lewis Wallace's Division at Shiloh," "Lessons of the War," and "The Siege of Vicksburg."

	Abstract:	Edward F. Nydegger (1831-1909) was a native of Aarberg, Switzerland who immigrated with his family to the United States in 1850 and settled in Weinsberg, Ohio. During the American Civil War he served in the 11th regiment, Indiana Infantry, and sketched many of the scenes he encountered during his travels. The collection consists of a scrapbook containing penciled drawings of Civil War scenes, a chronicle of the Nydegger family's emigration from Switzerland to Ohio in 1850, a family genealogical history, the Nydegger coat of arms, a Swiss tax receipt, a religious card from Nydegger's teacher in Aarberg, a record of Nydegger's experiences as a soldier, newspaper clippings, and religious mottos drawn and embellished by Nydegger.
