121	Title:	A Stitch in Time: The Cleveland Garment Industry Collection

	Abstract:	Cleveland, Ohio, played a prominent role in the garment industry in the United States from the late nineteenth century to the industry's decline a century later. Most of the owners of garment manufacturing firms in Cleveland, as throughout the United States, were owned by Jewish immigrants. The garment industry in Cleveland declined as a whole in the late twentieth century. In the early 2010s, the Western Reserve Historical Society began making efforts toward compiling the stories of the Cleveland garment industry through research and oral history interviews, culminating in a book and exhibition project titled A Stitch in Time: The Cleveland Garment Industry. The collection consists of budgets, correspondence, drafts, memoranda, newspaper clippings, notes, operating agreements, oral histories, orders, photographs, proposals, questionnaires, scrapbooks, and sketches pertaining to the planning, research, and implementation of the "Stitch in Time" project by the Western Reserve Historical Society.

	Abstract:	The Jewish Community Center of Cleveland, Ohio, was formed in 1948 by the merger of the Council Educational Alliance (est. 1899), Camp Wise (est. 1907), the Jewish Young Adult Bureau (est. 1939), and the Cultural Department of the Jewish Community Council (est. 1945), for the purpose of providing recreational social and cultural programs to Cleveland's Jewish community. By 1959 the center moved from Cleveland to the suburb of Cleveland Heights. The collection consists of minutes, reports, administrative files, financial records, and other records of the Jewish Community Center, the Council Educational Alliance, and the Jewish Young Adult Bureau, and camp applications, historical material and other records of Camp Wise.

123	Title:	L.N. Gross Company Records

	Abstract:	The L.N. Gross Company was a manufacturer and distributor of women's apparel founded in 1898 in Cleveland, Ohio, by a Russian immigrant, Louis N. Gross. Gross was president and manager until his death in 1941, when his sons, Nedward N., William V., and Julius S. Gross, and his son-in-law, Miltor E. Reed, became active in the management of the company. By the 1960s, the third generation of the Gross family managed the company. In 1919, the company built its headquarters at 1220 West Third Street in Cleveland. In 1929, additional production sites were acquired in Kent, Ohio, and in 1937 facilities opened in Fayetteville, Tennessee. During the Depression the company was troubled by strikes as well as the general business slump. The Welworth Realty Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the L.N. Gross Company, operated as title and leaseholder of the parent company's properties. An office was also maintained in the New York City garment district. Beginning in 1950, product manufacturing was performed by subcontractors in their own facilities. A wholly owned subsidiary, Bradley Knitwear Company, acted as sales outlet for the parent company. In 1974, company headquarters moved to Mayfield Village, Ohio. In 1984, after several years of financial difficulties, control of the company was turned over to an outside investment group, and the name was changed to Bradley Sportswear, Inc. The collection consists of a history of the company, an autobiography, passport and visa of Louis Gross, correspondence, reports, applications for patents, contracts, account books, and miscellaneous materials, including scrapbooks containing advertisements for garments made by the company.

124	Title:	Rabbi Myron Silverman Papers

	Abstract:	Myron Silverman was rabbi of the Suburban Temple, Beachwood, Ohio, a Reform Jewish congregation, from 1949-1975. After his ordination at Hebrew Union College in 1936, he held various pulpits around the country, and served as an Army chaplain during World War II. He came to Suburban Temple in 1949, one year after its founding. He was active in a number of groups, including the Citizens League of Cleveland, the American Jewish Committee, Fairhill Psychiatric Hospital, and the World Union of Progressive Judaism. He was national chairman of the Union of American Hebrew Congregation's Israel Commission, and president of the Cleveland Board of Rabbis. The collection consists of correspondence, sermons, prayers for special occasions, and talks relating to Silverman's roles at Suburban Temple, as well as materials relating to his participation in local and national organizations, particularly the Union of American Hebrew Congregation's Israel Commission.

	Abstract:	The Cleveland Jewish Publication Company of Cleveland, Ohio, was organized in 1964 to merge two existing Anglo-Jewish weekly newspapers, the Jewish Independent and the Jewish Review and Observer. The first issue of the merged newspaper, the Cleveland Jewish News, was published on October 30, 1964. Original trustees included Lawrence Williams, M.E. Glass, and Irving Kane. The collection consists of correspondence, legal documents, trustees' minutes, and financial statements. Includes legal documents involving Shomre Shaboth Congregation and the right of filial succession to the pulpit by a rabbi's son.

126	Title:	Ohab Zedek Congregation Records

	Abstract:	Ohab Zedek Congregation was an Orthodox Jewish congregation founded ca. 1884 and located near the Harvard-Broadway area of Cleveland, Ohio, in what had been Newburgh Village, Ohio, before its annexation to Cleveland in 1873. The congregation was housed at various locations in this neighborhood until 1909, when they moved into their own building on Homestead Ave. In 1895 the congregation acquired a section of the Lansing Cemetery, located at Lansing Ave. and East 58th St. Isolated from the centers of major Jewish settlement in Cleveland, and sustained by only a small local Jewish population, Ohab Zedek struggled during the Depression to survive. In 1933, the congregation sold its synagogue. In 1976, an elderly surviving member of Ohab Zedek arranged with Heights Jewish Center to undertake custodianship of the Ohab Zedek section of the Lansing Cemetery. The collection consists of two interment record scrolls (ca. 1920s) which provide a diagram of the location of the grave sites of the section of the Lansing Cemetery belonging to Ohab Zedek, a copy of a cemetery maintenance agreement (1976), and a history of Ohab Zedek compiled by Lou Rosenblum. The history includes a description of the Harvard-Broadway area during Ohab Zedek's lifetime, a description of the occupations of members of Ohab Zedek, and a map showing the location of the businesses of members of Ohab Zedek.

	Abstract:	Moses P. Halperin was a Cleveland, Ohio, architect who specialized in temple and synagogue design. In 1948, he formed a partnership with Sigmund Braverman, known as Braverman and Halperin. In addition to numerous buildings in the Cleveland area, the firm designed structures in various communities in the United States and Canada. In 1924, Halperin married Sara Allen Halperin. The collection consists of photocopies of articles, floor plans, and drawings of buildings.

	Abstract:	The Jewish Family Service Association of Cleveland, Ohio, was established in 1875 as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. It merged with the Hebrew Relief Organization in 1883 to form the Hebrew Relief Association. It was renamed the Jewish Social Service Bureau in 1922. The Bureau affiliated with the Western Reserve University School of Applied Social Sciences and helped train students for field placement. In 1943, the Bureau changed its name to the Jewish Family Service Association. The organization played a large role in the resettlement of Soviet Jews who came to Cleveland during the 1970s-1990s. Between 1989-1992, the Jewish Family Service Association assisted in the resettlement of 2,000 Soviet Jewish immigrants. The collection consists of materials relating to the organization's Soviet Jewish resettlement efforts. Included are Board of Trustee minutes, correspondence with other agencies and organizations involved in the resettlement process, newsletters, newspaper clippings, program descriptions, and publications.

	Abstract:	Julius Klein was a Cleveland, Ohio, Jewish businessman born in Slovakia. He emigrated to the United States in 1885, and settled in Cleveland in 1900. In 1900, he and his future mother-in-law, Rebecca Korach, purchased a skirt manufacturing company formerly known as Goodman and Korach Co. The new company, known as Julius Klein and Co., closed within a few years. In 1906, Klein was employed by Korach Sonnenfield Co., a cloak manufacturing company which in 1907 became the Korach-Ecker Co. In 1913, Klein opened Klein's Economy Store on Woodland Ave., selling women's ready-to-wear apparel. Following Julius Klein's death, his son, Alwyn Klein, continued the business. Following his death, his wife Beatrice operated the business until its liquidation in 1959. The collection consists of financial records, including a Klein's Economy Store ledger and stock book, a Korach-Ecker account book and specifications book, miscellaneous business and genealogical documents, and a photograph.

	Abstract:	Samuel Rocker founded and served as editor and publisher of a Yiddish newspaper, The Jewish World (Die Yiddishe Velt), in Cleveland, Ohio. Born in Galicia, he studied for the rabbinate and immigrated to the United States in 1891. In 1898, he established the first Jewish print shop in Cleveland. In 1908 he founded The Jewish Daily Press (Die Yiddishe Tegliche Presse) with partners Adolph Hass and Jonas Gross. After disagreement with his business partners a few years later, he founded The Jewish World. In 1914, the two newspapers merged with Rocker as editor and eventually, sole owner. In 1938, the first English edition was published. Rocker remained editor and publisher of The Jewish World until his death in 1936. He was also active in the Cleveland Jewish community, particularly with the Cleveland Hebrew Schools, the Hebrew Free Loan Association, the Council Educational Alliance, Mt. Sinai Hospital, and the Zionist movement. The collection consists of correspondence, newspaper articles, and memoirs.

133	Title:	Charles Cort Family Papers

	Abstract:	Charles Cort emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, from Gederowitz, Lithuania, in 1904. In 1906, he was joined by his wife, Tzeviah and their children. Charles Cort's sons, Al, Abe, and Lou, were introduced to the shoe business in Cleveland through helping out in their uncle's store, and then through work at various shoe stores in Cleveland. In September 1919, Abe Cort, along with his friend Phil Berman, purchased Oppenheimer's Shoe Store at Woodland Ave. and 37th St., renaming it the Cort Shoe Store. The Cort brothers, Al, Abe, Lou, and Paul, eventually became full partners in the Cort Shoe Company, which at its peak owned fifty-five stores. Most were called Cort Shoes, but several operated under the names King, Reed, Belmar, and Economy Shoe Companies. Stores were located in many northern Ohio communities. By the late 1970s, Cort Shoe Company went out of business. The collection consists of newspaper clippings, correspondence, family history, financial records, and legal documents.

	Abstract:	The Warrensville Center Synagogue, an Orthodox Jewish congregation in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, was established in 1959 as a result of a merger between three smaller synagogues, the Tetiever Ahavath Achim Anshe Sfard Congregation, the Kinsman Jewish Center, and Congregation Nvai Zedek. In 1970, Sherith Jacob Israel, the Eddy Road Jewish Center-Memorial Synagogue joined Warrensville Center. This congregation was itself a merger of Sherith Jacob and Sherith Israel of Mount Pleasant congregations. In 1972, Shaker-Lee Congregation was absorbed by the Warrensville Center Synagogue. Shaker-Lee Congregation was the result of a previous merger of Ohel Jacob, Ohel Yavne, and Tifereth Israel (not to be confused with The Temple-Tifereth Israel, a Reform congregation) congregations. The collection consists of organizational documents, membership lists, newsletters, newspaper clippings, and program brochures. Included is the card file (1950-1989) of funerals of congregants maintained by Rabbi Jacob Muskin, leader of the Kinsman Jewish Center (1950-1959) and the Warrensville Center Synagogue (1959-1990). Also included is the Warrensville Center Synagogue membership card file (1959), arranged alphabetically by family name and coded to indicate the members' original congregational affiliation.

	Abstract:	Albert M. Brown was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Russian Jewish immigrants. Brown became involved in social work in the Cleveland Jewish community, working at the Kinsman branch of the Council Educational Alliance from 1923-1929. After working at a New York City settlement house from 1930-1938, he returned to Cleveland and worked at the National Youth Administration and Bellefaire. In 1942, he became director of the Toledo Jewish Community Center. After returning to Cleveland in 1955, he served as executive director of the Community Temple (Beth Am) until 1963, when he was appointed the founding director of Council Gardens in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, a senior adult housing community. During his retirement, he worked part-time as the social director of his own residence, the Concord Apartments in Cleveland Heights. Brown wrote and produced many one-act plays. He was also authored The Camp Wise Story: 1907-1988, published in 1989. The collection consists of certificates, correspondence, programs, newspaper clippings, playscripts and other writings. 	Abstract:	The Hungarian Aid Society was formed in 1863 in Cleveland, Ohio, for the mutual protection and relief of its Jewish members. Hungarian Jewish immigrants Morris Black, his brother David Black, Herman Sampliner, and others established the fraternal organization to help new immigrants, assist the needy and sick, bury the dead, and provide benefits to orphans and widows. In 1948, the Society reorganized as a cemetery society. In the early 1960s, its operations were taken over by Park Synagogue. The collection consists of minutes, annual reports, cemetery records, legal documents, and correspondence.

	Abstract:	The Geneva Jewish Farmers, also known as the Lake Erie Jewish Community, was an association of about thirty-five farm families in Ashtabula, Lake, and Geauga Counties, Ohio. Jews from the Cleveland area settled around Geneva, Ohio, as early as 1908 and continued into the 1930s. They were supported by the Jewish Agricultural Society. The community disintegrated following World War II, as children of the original settlers chose other careers. The collection consists of correspondence and a scrapbook pertaining to two reunions of former farm family members and their descendants, and several published and unpublished articles about the community.

	Abstract:	Na'amat USA is a Labor Zionist women's organization originally called Pioneer Women. The Cleveland Council was founded in 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio, one year after the national organization came into being. As the organization grew, it was divided into numbered chapters. At its peak, there were fourteen chapters. In 1999, there were four chapters in the Cleveland Council, serving 650 women. Pioneer Women was organized to provide training, educational services, and social services to women, children, and families in Palestine. The Cleveland Council raised funds and sponsored programs that informed the Cleveland community of social service and educational needs in Israel. The national organization also promoted Habonim, a youth organization, and sponsored Jewish and cultural activities. In 1985 the name Pioneer Women was changed to Na'amat USA, in order to more closely match its sister organization in Israel, Na'amat. The collection consists of minutes, bulletins, donor program books, newspaper clippings and magazine articles, membership lists, correspondence and financial records.

	Abstract:	Rabbi Arthur J. Lelyveld served as senior rabbi of Anshe Chesed Congregation (Fairmount Temple) in Beachwood, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, from 1958-1986. Throughout his career he played key roles in national and local Jewish organizations and actively fought for civil rights. A native of New York City, Lelyveld received a B.A. from Columbia University in 1933, and was ordained at Hebrew Union College in 1939. From 1939-1944, he served congregations in Hamilton, Ohio, and Omaha, Nebraska. From 1944-1946 he was Executive Director of the Committee on Unity for Palestine, and from 1946-1956 served as Associate National Director, and then National Director, of B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundations. He also played leadership roles in a number of other national Jewish organizations, including American Jewish Congress, Central Conference of American Rabbis, and the Synagogue Council of America. On the local Cleveland level, he served in various capacities on the Cleveland Jewish Welfare Fund, the Jewish Community Federation, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Cleveland Chapter, and the Cleveland Board of Rabbis. Lelyveld was also the author of Atheism is Dead and of numerous monographs and articles. He was active in the civil rights movement of the 1960s, participating with other Cleveland clergy in voter registration efforts in Mississippi and serving as a minister-counselor to the Council of Federated Organizations under the auspices of the Commission on Race and Religion of the National Council of Churches. While serving in this capacity, Lelyveld was severely beaten. He also delivered the eulogy at the funeral of slain civil rights worker Andrew Goodman in 1964. The collection consists of correspondence, sermons, speeches, writings, and family material.

	Abstract:	Libbie L. Braverman was a nationally prominent teacher, author, lecturer, and consultant in the field of Jewish education. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she moved to Cleveland, Ohio, while in high school. She received a teaching certificate from Cleveland Normal School (ca. 1920) and a B.S. in Education from Western Reserve University in 1933. From 1946-1952 she was director of the Euclid Avenue Temple School and in 1945, became the first woman elected to the Board of the National Council for Jewish Education. She wrote numerous books and articles, including many co-authored with Nathan Brilliant. She was married to architect Sigmund Braverman in 1924. The collection consists of a scrapbook containing newspaper clippings, correspondence, teacher institute programs, synagogue bulletin articles, a certificate, and a curriculum vitae.
