| | Abstract: | The Jewish Bakers Union is a subsidiary of the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers' International Union. Local 56 represented employees of Jewish owned bakeries in Cleveland, Ohio. Jack Herskovitz, a Holocaust survivor, became a pioneering figure in the Jewish Bakers Union. He was voted President of Local 56 around 1967. He negotiated many labor agreements with employers and their attorneys representing the baking industry. He was consistently re-elected without opposition by the membership for 23 years. He retired in 1990 and passed away on April 29, 2016. His son, Abe, was elected President in 1990 and merged Local 56 into Bakers' Local 19 in 2003, and subsequently served as a Business Agent, Business Manager and then Treasurer of Local 19. As a result of the merger, the membership joined the largest Bakers' (BCTGM) Union in the USA and Canada.
