During the American Civil War, he served in the 9th Ohio Independent Battery, organized in Cleveland in 1861 and trained at Camp Wood, Ohio. In December 1862, McLeish and several others in the battery were discharged for ill health. The collection consists of two diaries, one written anonymously and the other written by Private John McLeish. The anonymous diary chronicles the writer's service in the 9th Ohio Independent Battery from January 10-August 31, 1862.
