	Abstract:	The Music and Drama Club of Cleveland was a women's club devoted to promoting interest in, and appreciation of, the combined arts of music and drama. The club was founded in 1904 in Cleveland, Ohio, and originally was called the Music and Drama Study Club. They held monthly meetings featuring performances, primarily by members, and awarded scholarships to students at the Cleveland Music School Settlement, Cleveland Play House and Cleveland Institute of Music, as well as donating funds to various musical organizations in the community. The collection consists of minutes, annual reports, scrapbook materials, and clippings, as well as questionnaires, scripts for skits, and publications concerning scholarship awards.

	Abstract:	The Northeast Ohio Jazz Society is one of America's leading organizations devoted to promoting the appreciation of jazz music. It was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in late in 1977 at the instigation of jazz enthusiast Willard Jenkins, who became the group's first president and subsequently was made executive director of the National Jazz Service Organization in Washington. Formally incorporated on March 22,1978, the Northern Ohio Jazz Society by the end of that year had begun presenting concerts and publishing a newsletter, Jazz Central. Working with Cuyahoga Community College, it helped launch the first Tri-C JazzFest in 1980. The collection consists of annual reports, flyers, and programs.

	Abstract:	The Fortnightly Musical Club was established by Cleveland, Ohio, women in 1894 to sponsor concerts and cultural programs. It later helped establish the Cleveland Music School Settlement and the Cleveland Institute of Music. The collection consists of programs, anniversary folders, a 1970 inventory, yearbooks, bulletins, guest books, scrapbooks, and minutes which also contain correspondence, financial statements, and lists of officers, members and events. Also included are materials from the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs.

	Abstract:	Frank Nowak (1888-1973) was a Polish tailor who immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1910 and later opened his own tailor shop. He was active in many Polish organizations, including the Polish National Choir and the Polish National Alliance, Group 458. The collection consists of minute books, correspondence, financial records, local anniversary publications and music relating to Polish-American groups in Cleveland, and papers relating to the Nowak family.

9	Title:	Fortnightly Musical Club Records, Series II

	Abstract:	The Fortnightly Musical Club was established in Cleveland, Ohio, by Mrs. Curtis Webster and other Cleveland women in 1894 to sponsor concerts and cultural programs. It was responsible for bringing to Cleveland many of its early orchestral and musical performances. In partnership with Adella Prentiss Hughes, Fortnightly presented the Symphony Orchestra Concerts which generated the interest in symphonic music that made it possible to organize the Cleveland Orchestra. It later helped establish the Cleveland Music School Settlement and the Cleveland Institute of Music. Fortnightly's role as a concert-agency diminished as Cleveland developed into a music center, and the club turned its attention to awarding performing opportunities for its members and other musicians in the Cleveland area. Fortnightly continues to be an important charter member of the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs. The collection consists of minutes, programs, yearbooks, bulletins, a scrapbook, and record books which were compiled at the turn of the century from minute books, members' records, yearbooks, programs and reference works. These papers pertain primarily to the concerts and activities of one of the oldest musical societies in the Cleveland area and to the efforts of women to promote this cultural organization.

11	Title:	German Concert Orchestra Records

	Abstract:	The German Concert Orchestra, a musical and cultural performing group dedicated to the preservation of music by German composers, was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1925. Originally part of the German Central Organization (Deutche Zentrale), it was known as the "Orchester der Deutche Zentrale." Breaking away from its parent organization in 1937, it was renamed the German Concert Orchestra in 1938. The orchestra performed many concerts as a part of the German-American community throughout the 1930s and 1940s. It affiliated with the Society of Danube Swabians in Cleveland during the 1970s and 1980s, and was based during these years at the Society's Banater Hall. In 1989, the orchestra ceased its affiliation with the Society of Danube Swabians, and once again became a group of the German Central Organization. The collection consists of brief histories, minutes, correspondence, financial reports, publicity,and programs.

12	Title:	Swiss Singing Societies Records

	Abstract:	The Swiss Singing Societies consist of a male chorus, women's chorus, and a mixed chorus. In 1867, Swiss immigrants in Cleveland, Ohio, formed the male chorus Schwiezer Gesang Verien Gruetli Bund. In 1872, a mutual aid society, the Swiss Society (Schweizerischen Unterstuetzungs Verein) was formed by the chorus, and the chorus became known as the Gesang Club Gruetli. Later that year, the Gesang Club Gruetli merged with the Helvetia Maennerchor, another Swiss male chorus, to form the Schwiezer Maennerchor of Cleveland. Founders included Markus Knobel, Eduard Gisel, Franz Knobel, Jakob Bohner, Rudolf Knobel, and Arnold Wilhelm. Professor Jakob Keller was the first director/conductor. In 1902, the Schwiezer Maennerchor established a women's chorus. The group hosted a national Saengerfest three times; 1897, 1921, and 1956. The group was still in existence in 1995. The collection consists of minutes, account books and financial records, membership records, correspondence, newspaper clippings and publicity materials, musical scores, and programs.

	Abstract:	The Musical Art Society, a women's music club, was founded in 1912 in Cleveland, Ohio. Performance and audition standards were criteria for admission of members; and meetings, held at members' homes, included vocal and instrumental performances and presentation of papers on composers and musical topics. The Society also sponsored musical and cultural events for the public, and offered scholarships to promising young musicians and vocalists in the Cleveland area. 	Abstract:	The Cleveland Opera Association was incorporated in 1944 as a non-profit organization to promote and present concerts in Cleveland, Ohio. The founder, Giacomo Bernardi, served as managing director until his death in 1966. After his death, his wife, Harriet, served as manager. Board of trustee members included Harry F. Payer, William Stinchcomb, Benjamin Nicola, Willard W. Brown, Thomas A. Farwick, and Chisholm Halle. Performers were both classical and popular musicians and artists. These included the Bolshoi Ballet, Jose Greco, Yehudi Menuhin, Vladimir Horowitz, Andres Segovia, Jan Pierce, Lily Pons, Marian Anderson, Charles Laughton, Victor Borge, and Simon and Garfunkel. Most of the performances took place in Music Hall. The predecessor of the Cleveland Opera Association was the Cleveland Concert Association, organized by Giacomo Bernardi in 1919 and operated by him until its demise in 1932. The collection consists of newspaper clippings, letters, and other materials relating to Giacomo Bernardi; association financial reports; minutes of meetings; and scrapbooks of performances. The scrapbooks contain both programs and newspaper clippings.

	Abstract:	The Chamber Music Guild was found ca. 1946 in Cleveland, Ohio, by a group of chamber music lovers in order to provide them with the opportunity to hear chamber music played by local professional musicians and singers. Membership was limited to forty members, and recitals were held in members' homes on a monthly basis. One concert per year was held for the general public. Performers included members of the Cleveland Orchestra and teachers at local musical institutions. Performances included new compositions by several contemporary northern Ohio composers, including Herbert Elwell, J.D. Bain Murray, Rudolph Bubalo, Klaus George Roy, and Katharine Warne. The collection consists of correspondence, account books, notebooks, reports, receipts, a list of performers, notes, membership records, newspaper clippings, and programs.

	Abstract:	The Cleveland Chamber Music Society was founded in 1949 by a small group of individuals in order to sponsor chamber music concerts of high quality by world class musicians in the Greater Cleveland, Ohio, area. Concerts took place at a number of venues, many in the University Circle area, and also at the Fairmount Temple Auditorium, Beachwood, Ohio. In 1953, the Society established a school concert program, bringing local chamber music ensembles to schools throughout the Greater Cleveland, Ohio, area. In 1969, the Society became affiliated with the national program, Young Audiences Inc., whose goals were also to educate young students in the field of chamber music. The society continued to support these concerts when Young Audiences became an independent organization in 1978. Another mission of the Society was to commission the writing and performing of new compositions by local Cleveland composers, included Arthur Shepherd, Normand Lockwood, Walter Aschaffenburg, Starling Cumberworth, and Gerald R. Humel. The collection consists of articles of incorporation, code of regulations, minutes, correspondence, histories, reports, programs, contracts, financial statements, lists, publicity materials, news releases, newspaper clippings, tax documents, schedules, brochures, and manuscript music.

	Abstract:	Ignatius M. Jarzynski (1888-1942) was a physician prominent in the Polish-American community of Cleveland, Ohio. He was a founding member of the Medical and Dental Arts Club, president of the League of Polish Organizations, and a trustee of the Musical Arts Association. His wife, Helen Conrad Jarzynski, was also active in Polish organizations, as well as serving on the Women's Committee of the Cleveland Orchestra. The collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, publications, and certificates relating to Dr. Jarzynski's career, and, in part, to that of his wife. The correspondence, 1917-1942, includes letters from Ohio Attorney General John W. Bricker regarding draft board examinations during World War I, and an acknowledgment of condolences from Ignace Jan Paderewski. In addition, the collection contains the minutes, 1916-1922, of the Medical and Dental Arts Club, handwritten in Polish, mimeographed minutes, 1934-1939, of the annual meetings of the Musical Arts Association, and miscellaneous materials relating to the League of Polish Organizations.
