| | | | Creator: | Greater Cleveland Welfare Rights Organization | | | | Dates: | 1965-1990 | | | | Abstract: | The Greater Cleveland Welfare Rights Organization (f. 1966) formed as a result of a protest march from Cleveland, Ohio, to Columbus, Ohio, in June of 1966. The march was led by Reverend Paul Younger of Fidelity Baptist Church in Cleveland with a small group of welfare recipients to highlight the plight of low-income people. This group used the march to put forth their demands of all people being able to meet their basic needs while having their dignity preserved. The organization grew and eventually a state affiliate, the Ohio Welfare Rights Organization, was formed as well as the National Welfare Rights Organization. In 1994 the Greater Cleveland Welfare Rights Organization (GCWRO) changed its name to the Empowerment Center of Greater Cleveland. | | | | Creator: | Zucker, Henry L. | | | | Dates: | 1985 | | | | Abstract: | Henry L. Zucker (1910-1998) was born in Cleveland, Ohio. A graduate of Glenville High School, Zucker graduated from Western Reserve University in 1932 and then completed a master's degree from the university's School of Applied Social Sciences in 1935. He began his career as a social worker with local agencies and during World War II served as a special consultant in Washington, D. C. In 1946 he began his long association with Cleveland's Jewish community when he accepted the position of Associate Director of the Jewish Welfare Federation of Cleveland. When he retired in 1975 he had worked as Executive Director (1948-1965) and Executive Vice President (1965-1975) of the Jewish Community Federation.
