 Abstract:  The Commercial Bank of Lake Erie was Cleveland, Ohio's first bank. It was organized in 1816, reorganized in 1832, and dissolved in 1845. The company was incorporated by Seth Doan, Alfred Kelley, David Long, Erastus Miles, John H. Strong, Philo Taylor, George Wallace, and Samuel Williamson. Alfred Kelley was the president of the company, and Leonard Case served as cashier. The collection consists of discount ledgers, daybooks and a letter book.

 Abstract:  The Warsaw Savings and Loan Association was incorporated in 1916 in Cleveland, Ohio, as a closed, mutual stock enterprise. In the 1920s the Association began accepting public deposits, mainly serving Cleveland's Polish community. Expansion during the 1920s was followed by a decline and freeze during the Depression. Reorganization in 1936 helped the Association begin a new period of growth. In 1952 it changed its name to United Savings Association. As of 1979 it had ten branches in Cleveland's southern suburbs. The collection consists of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee minutes, correspondence, reports to regulatory agencies, audit and examination reports, mortgage and real estate lists, daily ledgers, and sample forms and certificates.

 Abstract:  Arthur A. Miller was a Cleveland, Ohio, lawyer with a particular interest in the corruption of Cleveland banks during the 1930s. The collection consists of scrapbooks of newspaper clippings relating to bank corruption and a wide variety of other Cleveland topics, especially legal cases Miller found interesting. The collection has value for those interested in legal battles in Cleveland during the 1930s and 1940s, some of which were bank-related cases.

 Abstract:  The Cleveland Clearing House Association is a bank check clearinghouse founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1858. It also conducted periodic bank examinations and aided in the campaign to locate a branch of the Federal Reserve in Cleveland, coordinated political lobbying efforts and public marketing and information campaigns on behalf of the banking community and led the effort to transition from a paper-based payment system to an electronic/computer-based system. The Cleveland Clearing House Association has also coordinated the philanthropic efforts of member banks by creating a system for the non-profit community to submit project proposals to the Clearing House to be considered by all member banks for a unified funding decision. The collection consists of agendas, bank statements, budgets, constitutions, correspondence, financial statements, income tax returns, invoices, legal briefs and opinions, lists, magazine articles, memoranda, minutes, newspaper clippings, notes, press releases, proposals, publications, receipts, reports, resolutions, rules and regulations, a telegram and worksheets.

 Abstract:  Calvin Pease was a lawyer, legislator and judge, of Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio, in the Connecticut Western Reserve. Pease came to the Western Reserve from Connecticut in 1800. He was admitted to the bar and was appointed the first clerk of the court of quarter sessions, a position he held until 1803. He served as judge of the Third Circuit, Court of Common Pleas (1803-1810), and justice of the Ohio Supreme Court (1816-30). Pease also served as a tax collector, primarily in Trumbull County, from 1801-1819. He served in the Ohio state legislature from Trumbull County, and also was the official agent for the U.S. postmaster-general in northeastern Ohio. He was a delegate to the canal convention meeting in Warren in 1833. Pease continued the private practice of law until his death at Warren in 1839. The collection consists of bank checks signed by Pease on the Western Reserve Bank from 1817-1837; on the Commercial Bank of Lake Erie in 1833; and promissory notes to the Western Reserve Bank, 1825-1830.

 Abstract:  Society Corporation was Ohio's first registered bank holding company, formed in 1958 when the Society for Savings (founded in 1849 as a mutual savings bank) was merged into Society National Bank (a stock bank organized in 1956 to provide commercial banking services as a subsidiary of Society for Savings). Myron T. Herrick was president of Society for Savings from 1894-1905 and 1908-1921. A pioneer in issuing term and capital loans during the Depression, Society was also a leader in marketing and promotional methods for attracting new depositors. The unprecedented unification of Society for Savings and Society National Bank in 1958 was orchestrated by president Mervin B. France. Litigation regarding the merger was not settled until 1962. By 1989, Society Corporation had affiliates in four regions of Ohio and controlled assets of over $9 billion. Its most formidable acquisition was that of Centran Corporation in 1985, itself a regional multi-bank holding company. In 1990, Society Corporation acquired Trustcorp, the parent holding company of Toledo Trustcorp, Inc. The collection consists of articles of incorporation, bylaws, codes of regulations, minutes, legal and financial documents, correspondence, histories, annual reports, newspapers, notes, and transcriptions of audiotapes. The majority of the material consists of bound volumes of minutes of board of directors, stockholders, and other committees of Society Corporation's affiliated, acquired, and merged banking institutions. Included are the records of Centran Corporation, which include its predecessor Central National Bank, and banks and other institutions which merged with them or were aquired. Also included is Toledo Trustcorp, Inc. (formerly Northwest Ohio Bancshares Inc), which contains records of Toledo Trustcorp, its affliliate Toledo Trust Company, and banks and other institutions which merged with or were acquired by Toledo Trustcorp.

 Abstract:  Ameritrust Corporation began in 1894 when The Cleveland Trust Company was founded in Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland Trust then assumed the contracts of the Security Safe Deposit and Trust Company, also located in Cleveland, Ohio. Beginning in 1903, Cleveland Trust acquired or merged with several other savings banks, including The Windemere Savings and Trust Company and The Western Reserve Trust Company. Cleveland Trust promoted innovative operating policies and procedures, including the establishment of an advertising department in 1913. It increased its number of branch offices through additional mergers, including Lake Shore Banking and Trust Company and The Garfield Savings Bank. Growth continued during the 1920s with the acquisition of the Pearl Street Savings and Trust Company. Two more banks were acquired in the 1930s; Midland Bank and South Euclid Bank. A new six story office building at East 9th Street and Huron Road was constructed in 1962. An adjacent office tower was completed in 1971. In 1974, CleveTrust Corporation, a bank holding company, was formed, with Cleveland Trust as the lead bank. Cleveland Trust was one of six local banks holding short-term notes of the City of Cleveland when financial difficulties in 1978 lead to the city's default on these loans. In 1979, The Cleveland Trust Company's name was changed to AmeriTrust Corporation. In 1986, the name was changed to Ameritrust Corporation. In 1991, Ameritrust merged with Society Corporation, and in 1992, went out of existence as a corporate entity. The collection consists of articles of incorporation, bylaws, codes of regulation, annual reports, minutes, histories, newspaper and magazine clippings, financial documents, directories, handbooks, correspondence, press releases, biographical sketches, signage, marketing material, speeches, in-house publications, scrapbooks, and original advertising art work. The collection includes records of banks and other institutions merged into and acquired by The Cleveland Trust Company. Operating records of The Cleveland Trust Company are included, as are records created by the Publicity Department of Cleveland Trust and in-house publications. Also included are records documenting Cleveland Trust's leadership in the fields of branch banking, publicity, and marketing. Documents pertaining to the construction of the Ninth Street Tower and parking garage are part of these records. Materials concerned with Frederick H. Goff's involvement with the Cleveland Foundation are included.

The collection also contains branch acquisition files and files of affiliate acquisitions, i.e. Centran Corporation and Central National Bank of Cleveland. Of particular note are reports on attracting new depositors, public relations and advertising files, and material on the construction and renovation of Society's headquarters. Also included are records of the law firm of Mather & Strong, the Cleveland Mutual Insurance Co, and Levi Sartwell, general agent of the Neil Stageline.

 Abstract:  Donald McBride was a lawyer and businessman and son of John Harris McBride, owner of Root & McBride Company, a leading wholesale dry goods establishment in Cleveland, Ohio. Donald's brothers, Malcolm and Herbert, were officers in Root & McBride Company. His sister Grace was married to Dr. George Crile, and his sister Edith was married to Henry S. Sherman, chairman of Society for Savings, 1903-1936. Donald's wife, Mary Helen Harman McBride, was daughter of industrialist Ralph A. Harman, who ran Cleveland Forge and Iron Company, was a founder of Cleveland Trust Company, and a director of Cleveland Electric Railway Company. Mary Helen's sister Grace was married to Samuel Livingston Mather, and her sister Sue was married to diplomat John Pelenyi. Her great aunt, Grace Harman Wade, was married to Jeptha H. Wade. The collection consists of Harman and McBride family correspondence, genealogies, coats of arms, reminiscences, memorials, school reports, scrapbooks, ledgers, journals, diaries, newspaper clippings, obituaries, reprints, autograph book, receipts, verses, blueprints, speeches and photographs. Included are personal papers for Ralph A.  Abstract:  The Ford family were prominent lawyers, philanthropists, and businessmen of Cleveland, Ohio, during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The collection consists of genealogies, biographical sketches, correspondence, diaries, journals, account books, appointment books, ledgers, stock certificates, minutes, leases, articles of incorporation, wills, deeds, corporate inventories, maps, newspaper and magazine clippings, tax assessments and returns, diplomas, certificates, military orders, and discharge papers. Material is included on several banking institutions, including Garfield Savings Bank, The Western Reserve Trust Company, Metropolitan National Savings Bank, and the East End Savings and Trust Company. Material on Ford family involvement in the construction and management of the Williamson Building is included, as is family involvement in other real estate enterprises, including The New Amsterdam Company, One Euclid Company, and the Ford McCaslin Company. Involvement in various legal firms by H. Clark, Horatio, and David K. Ford is well documented, as is David K. Ford's role in the organization and operation of the Lubrizol Corporation and Lubrizol Foundation. Family involvement with the Euclid Avenue Congregational Church, and with other philanthropic and social service organizations, such as the American Red Cross, the Maternal Health Association, University Hospitals, and the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University, is documented. Family members were also involved with the Congregational City Missionary Society, the Congregational Home Missionary Society, the Schauffler Missionary Training School (later Schauffler College of Religious and Social Work), and the National Council of the Congregational Churches of the United States. David K. Ford's involvement with Defiance College is documented. David and Elizabeth Brooks Ford's commitment to community service and social reform is well documented in this collection, including correspondence with others sharing their interests, such as Ralph Hayes of the City Club, Dorothy Adams Hamilton Brush with the Maternal Health Association, Agnes Brooks Young with the Cleveland Playhouse, and Katherine Gill Brooks of the Visiting Nurse Association. Of particular interest is the correspondence of H. Clark Ford with the notorious swindler Cassie Chadwick. The majority of the genealogical and family history materials included is the work of Oliver Kingsley Brooks.
