| | | | Creator: | Hubbell, Charles | | | | Dates: | 1900-1970 | | | | Abstract: | Charles H. Hubbell (1898-1971) was a well-known aviation artist and native of Cleveland, Ohio. During World War I, he served in the Navy and was a draftsman in the design of naval aircraft. He graduated from the Cleveland School of Art in 1922, and became a commercial artist. Hubbell received his private pilots license in 1927 by exchanging aviation art with flight instructors for flying lessons. He was commissioned by Thompson Products of Cleveland to paint the winning aircraft of each year's Thompson Trophy Race. In 1937, the first Thompson Products aviation art calendar by Charles Hubbell was produced. He painted for the yearly calendar until 1969. In 1949, the Military Air Transport Service (MATS) invited Hubbell on an around the world tour. The result was the 1951 calendar featuring the aircraft and operations of MATS. Hubbell was also a consultant to the Thompson Auto-Album and Aviation Museum, and later the Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of views of aircraft, rockets, missiles, and drones; power plants; airfields and aviation-related facilities; equipment, and aviation personalities. | | | | Creator: | Gray, A. Donald | | | | Dates: | 1922-1939 | | | | Abstract: | A. Donald Gray (1891-1939) was a landscape architect and designer in Cleveland, Ohio, from 1920-1939. Gray worked briefly with Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., in Brookline, Massachusetts, before establishing a landscape architecture practice in Cleveland. He designed many private gardens and estates for some of the most elite families of Cleveland and its outlying suburbs, including the noted private development of Fairhill Rd. houses in 1931. Gray was also the landscape designer for several public projects, including the Cedar-Central apartments, the first federal public-housing project in the nation, and many of Cleveland's public parks. Perhaps his most notable achievement was the creation of the WPA-funded Horticultural Gardens for the Great Lakes Exposition, 1936-1937, some of which remain on the site north of Cleveland's Municipal Stadium. The gardens were named for Gray as a memorial after his death. Gray took several trips to England, South America, Mexico and elsewhere throughout his career to study the landscaping of great houses and public places. He also contributed a regular gardening column to the Cleveland Press during the mid-1930s. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of A. Donald Gray, his friends and business associates; views of his landscaping projects; scenes from the Great Lakes Exposition, and vacation photographs. Included in the oversize materials are images of his garden and landscaping designs for several Cleveland, Ohio families. Linsey's livelihood included painting, teaching art and photography, and producing architectural drawings and personal portraits. The collection consists of views of buildings, bridges, monuments, sculptures, residences, and other works of architecture throughout Cleveland and northeastern Ohio. The bulk of the collection focuses on downtown Cleveland and the Flats area. Lees and Hosea Townsend Bradner of Cleveland, Ohio. It incorporated in 1909. The company specialized in gear hobbing and thread milling machinery for automobile timing and transmission gears and other applications. Hosea Bradner's sons; John A., George T., and James H. Bradner, ran the company in the post-World War II era. The company was purchased by White Consolidated Industries in 1967 and by 1983 the name Lees-Bradner had been phased out and the Cleveland plant closed. After White Consolidated Industries was itself purchased by Electrolux in 1986, the gear hobbing division was sold and the name Lees-Bradner was reinstated as a machine tool manufacturer. | | | | Creator: | Bailey, Walter K. | | | | Dates: | 1879-1975 | | | | Abstract: | Walter K. Bailey was a Cleveland, Ohio, businessman. A native of Cleveland and the son of L.A. Bailey, founder of the Bailey Company department store, Walter Bailey was raised in East Cleveland and graduated from Oberlin College in 1919. He went to work for the Warner & Swasey Company, a leading manufacturer of machine tools, especially turret lathes, and telescopes and optical equipment, in 1919. By 1928, the company was the world's leading manufacturer of turret lathes, and during World War II produced half of all the turret lathes made in the U.S. After learning the business on the shop floor, he joined the national sales force of Warner & Swasey in 1921, moving up in management and eventually becoming vice president of sales in 1942. During World War II he was in charge of manufacturing operations, and became vice president of the company in 1949. He was president and chief executive officer from 1955-1962, chairman of the board and chief executive officer from 1962-1964, and chairman of the board until his retirement in 1967. Under Bailey's leadership, Warner & Swasey diversified and acquired several smaller companies, growing into a major international producer of machine tools and related products. Bailey also was active in various philanthropic organizations in Cleveland, and served as a trustee of Oberlin College, the Musical Arts Association, and Fairmount Presbyterian Church. CThe cection consists of photographs collected by Walter K. Bailey in 1975 to illustrate a narrative history of Warner and Swasey Company. It includes individual and group portraits of Warner & Swasey officers and employees, including W. R. It was incorporated in 1915 as the Electrical League of Cleveland Inc., a non-profit association of electrical companies. Founding members included George E. Miller of the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company and J. Robert Crouse of the General Electric Company. Under the leadership of John E. (Jack) North, president from 1923 to 1949, the League's primary function was the promotion of electrical products and services available to consumers through its membership, which included electrical manufacturers, distributors, dealers, contractors, and key Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company employees. Educational programs, meetings, and trade shows sponsored by the League were designed to educate the public on the uses of electricity and to provide technical training and marketing techniques to League members. The League established collateral organizations, including the Electrical Maintenance Engineers Association, the Women's Division, and the Sight Saving Council of Cleveland, in order to bring its educational and promotional programs to targeted groups. By 1949, the League became primarily an industrial organization. In 1958, the League was reorganized as a trade association. Its name was changed in the 1980s to the Electrical League of Northern Ohio, Inc. This collection also contains substantial personal papers of John E. (Jack) North, documenting his career in the electrical industry. The collection consists of individual portraits of League directors, officers, and meeting speakers; group portraits of general membership and other meetings; and views of trade shows and fairs, events, trips, inspections, educational programs, social functions, and other League activities. Also includes photographs of activities and individuals of affiliated organizations, including the Electrical Maintenance Engineers Association. Photographs reflect League sales activities aimed at promoting the use of electrical appliances to consumers, as well as social events and outings. Of particular interest are photographs of classes and programs for women, designed to educate them about uses of electricity in the modern home, and depictions of early electrical consumer goods. | | | | Creator: | Richman Brothers Company | | | | Dates: | 1924-1992 | | | | Abstract: | The Richman Brothers Company began in Cleveland, Ohio, when Henry Richman, a Jewish immigrant from Bavaria, and his partner, Joseph Lehman, moved their men's clothing manufacturing business, the Lehman-Richman Company, from Portsmouth, Ohio, to Cleveland in 1879. Following the depression of 1893, Lehman retired, and in 1904, Henry Richman turned over the business to his sons; Nathan, Charles, and Henry, Jr., and the business became the Richman Brothers Company. The first retail store was established in Cincinnati in 1906, followed a year later by stores in Cleveland and Louisville, Kentucky. Moving away from reliance on outside piecework, the Cleveland plant at 1600 E. 55 St. was built in 1916. The company incorporated in 1919. Throughout the 1920s-1930s, Richman Brothers continued to open new retail stores. After the deaths of the three Richman Brothers, the company was headed by Frank C. Lewman, and later by George H. Richman, until 1970, when Donald J. Gerstenberger became president and CEO. Expansion continued throughout the 1940s-1950s, despite problems with the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America which attempted to unionize Richman Brothers. It remained a non-union shop throughout its existence. In 1969, Richman Brothers became a subsidiary of F.W. Woolworth Company. In 1986, corporate headquarters was moved to Massachusetts, and in 1990, its Cleveland manufacturing plant was closed. By December 1992, Richman Brothers Company had been completely liquidated. | | | | Creator: | Cafarelli, Carmela | | | | Dates: | 1870-1979 | | | | Abstract: | Carmela Cafarelli (ca. 1880-1979) was an Italian-American opera star, founder of an opera company, and accomplished harpist from Cleveland, Ohio. Her father, Rocco Cafarelli, was a renowned Italian harpist who had immigrated to Cleveland in the 1880s, and was his daughter's earliest teacher. At the age of eight, she began study with master harpist Henry B. Fabiani in Cleveland. As a harpist, she toured the United States and abroad. She also became a solo harpist for the Cleveland Orchestra. Cafarelli studied voice with William Saal in Cleveland, and later attended the Conservatorie Santa Lucia and the Reale Accademia Filarmonica Romana in Italy, earning diplomas in both voice and harp. After her return to the United States in 1924, she undertook additional musical studies with Benjamino Gigli and Pietro Audisio of the New York Metropolitan Opera. In 1929, she returned to Cleveland, and in 1934, founded the Cafarelli Opera Company. This group toured throughout the United States and put on many charitable performances in Northeast Ohio. Cafarelli stopped performing in 1945, but continued to head her opera company and became a leading philanthropist and promoter of the arts in Cleveland. He opened his first studio in Cleveland in 1859, and maintained his photographic business in there until 1910. The collection consists of one photograph album, titled Photographic Sketches by J. M. Greene, and including eighteen albumen paper prints made by Cleveland, Ohio photographer Jeremiah Merritt Greene. The images include views of Western Reserve architecture, hotels, homes, a locomotive, a paddle-wheel steamship, Abraham Lincoln's catafalque on Public Square in Cleveland, Ohio, views of an unidentified river (possibly the Chagrin River falls), and the First Presbyterian Church of Cleveland, known as the Old Stone Church. White Foundation, all of Cleveland, Ohio. He was born in Massachusetts, part of the White family which had immigrated from England ca. 1638. He moved to Cleveland in 1867. In 1876 he, his half-brother Howard W. White, and Rollin C. White (no relation) incorporated the White Sewing Machine Company. In 1899, his son Rollin Henry White invented the White steam car, put into production by the White Sewing Machine Company in 1900. In 1906, The automobile division was separated from the Sewing Machine Company as the White Company, later the White Motor Company. He and his wife, Almira Greenleaf White, had eight children; Mabel Almira Harris (wife of James Armstrong Harris), Alice Maud Hammer (wife of William Joseph Hammer), Windsor Thomas White, Clarence Greenleaf White, Rollin Henry White, Walter Charles White, and Ella Almira Ford (wife of Horatio Ford). The collection consists of individual and group portraits depicting the ancestors and descendants of Thomas H. White. Wicker retired and sold the school in 1979, which was still in operation in 1990. The collection consists of individual portraits of founder Amanda Wicker, her friends and associates; Clarke School board members, school graduates, and models; and views of events, activities and instructional classes. Included in the collection are portraits of Cleveland Mayor George Voinovich, Representative Troy Lee James, Cynthia Holloway, Judge Perry B. Jackson, Wyatt Brownlee, and Elizabeth Lambright. Organized by Bessie Blue, it was to provide residents of the Eliza Bryant Center, a home for the African American elderly, with a cheerful and homelike atmosphere. Members of the Auxiliary raised funds to purchase items and supplies such as kitchen equipment, linen, beds, carpeting, and electronics. The collection consists of group portraits of Auxiliary members, Center residents, and program participants; and views of the Eliza Bryant Center and the programs, fundraisers, and other activities sponsored by its auxiliary. Included in the collection are photographs of Councilwoman Fanny Lewis, Congressman Louis Stokes, and Governor Richard Celeste. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Bertha Blue, her daughter Jane Darr, Welcome T. Blue, Sr., and other family members and friends. Included in the collection are photographs of Jane Edna Hunter, Virginia Bray, and G. Howard Fields. | | | | Creator: | Hough Bakeries, Inc. | | | | Dates: | 1920-1979 | | | | Abstract: | Hough Bakeries Inc. was established by Lionel Pile as Hough Home Bakery in 1903 in Cleveland, Ohio. It was located at 8708 Hough Avenue. The company grew to become the largest multiple unit bakery in Ohio, and one of ten largest nationwide. Expansion into the suburbs began in the 1920s. In 1941, the former Star Bakery Company plant was purchased, and Hough operations and headquarters were moved there. The company incorporated in 1945, and the name was changed to Hough Bakeries, Inc. in 1952. Hough Foods, producer and distributor of frozen foods, became a subsidiary to the parent company in 1955. Hough's catering services, begun in the 1930s, became a subsidiary in 1956, when the company underwent corporate reorganization. 48 retail outlets operated into the early 1980s. In 1990, the Pile family sold the business to Amerifoods. In 1992, the company closed all remaining stores, and filed for Chapter Seven bankruptcy. The catering division was sold to the International Exposition Center, Brook Park, Ohio. The company name and recipes were purchased by Kraft General Foods. Views contained in the collection include buildings, churches, and residences associated with the family, such as the Cuyahoga and Williamson Buildings and the New Amsterdam Hotel in Cleveland, and Schauffler Hall at Defiance College.
