Based on precedents established by the Northwest Territory, male citizens between the ages of 16 and 45 in Ohio were required to perform military duty. The Ohio Militia was divided into four divisions initially, with a fifth established in 1813. Elijah Wadsworth of Canfield, Ohio, commanded the 4th Division. Each division was further divided into four or five brigades, which were then divided into regiments and companies. | | | Creator: | Whittlesey, Elisha | | | Dates: | 1801-1863 | | | Abstract: | Elisha Whittlesey was a lawyer, United States Representative from Ohio for eight terms from 1823-1838, and comptroller of the Treasury under Taylor, Fillmore, Pierce, and Lincoln. A resident of Canfield, Ohio, Whittlesey was prosecuting attorney for the entire Western Reserve from 1807-1823, and was an officer and private secretary to Gen. Wm. Henry Harrison during the War of 1812. As a circuit lawyer, Whittlesey specialized in land cases, and his business interests were in the handling of eastern capital invested in Ohio lands. Affiliated with the Natl. Republican and Whig parties, Whittlesey was a typical conservative state leader of the 19th century, primarily concerned with economic matters affecting the growth of Ohio. Active in the American Colonization Society, he believed in expatriation as the answer to the slavery problem. The collection consists of financial papers, notes, speeches, docket books, newspaper clippings, certificates of appointment, and letters to Whittlesey. The speeches include topics such as African colonization, agriculture, the Ohio Militia, and the War of 1812. The letters include material on Brady's Leap, the Ohio Canal Fund Commissioners, the estate of Samuel Griswold, and the history of Canfield, Ohio, the Firelands and the Western Reserve. | | | Creator: | Wadsworth, Elijah family | | | Dates: | 1702-1910 | | | Abstract: | General Elijah Wadsworth (1747-1817) was a prominent figure in the early history of Ohio's Western Reserve who served in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. He was a captain in the 2nd continental light dragoons in the Revolutionary War and was the commander, major-general, of the 4th division of the Ohio Militia during the War of 1812. Wadsworth was also the largest land owner in Canfield during its early years, and its first postmaster, and its tax collector during the early years. Elijah Wadsworth's two descendants who are most frequently encountered in the collection are Maria C. Wadsworth and Henry Wadsworth. Maria C. Wadsworth was the daughter, and only child, of Elijah Wadsworth's son George. She lived in Canfield and married William B. Dawson. Henry Wadsworth (1784-1830) was a son of Elijah Wadsworth. He stayed behind in Litchfield, Connecticut, when Gen. Wadsworth moved to Canfield, and stayed in the general area all his life. Frederick, (1786-1869) George (1793-1832), and Rhoda Wadsworth (1748- ?) were other children of Elijah. The collection consists of letters and documents relating to the Wadsworth family starting with Gen. Elijah Wadsworth, and continuing on through his children and grandchildren, with some items from family friends, like Elisha Whittlesey, and life/society in this period.
