 Abstract:  The Historic American Buildings Survey was a national survey to record and catalog historic buildings. It began in 1934 as a federal make-work project to provide work for unemployed architects, draftsmen and photographers. It was initially funded and supervised by the Civil Works Administration and later supervised by the National Park Service, the American Institute of Architecture, and the Library of Congress, with a combination of private and Works Progress Administration (WPA) funds. William A. Bohnard was the first Northern Ohio District Officer. The collection consists of field notebooks, correspondence, articles, project histories, financial records, administrative forms, sketches, maps, blueprints, drawings, lists of buildings, and indexes of the HABS Northern Ohio District (District 22).

 Abstract:  Adelaide Rudolph (1858-1953) was a niece of President and Mrs. James A. Garfield who was a teacher and librarian at Columbia University. After her retirement, she worked on a history of Hiram, Ohio, at the Cleveland Public Library. Her father, Joseph Rudolph, was a soldier in Company A, 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the American Civil War. The collection consists of letters, a journal, genealogical data, and newspaper clippings of the Garfield and Rudolph families.

 Abstract:  Frederick Clayton Waite (1870-1956) was a medical educator who helped establish higher standards for medical and dental schools in the United States. He founded the Department of Histology and Embryology at Western Reserve University Medical and Dental Schools in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was professor from 1901-1940. Waite visited and inspected virtually every medical and dental school in the United States before and after World War I. He was a prolific author, particularly after his retirement, writing books on the history of the Western Reserve University Medical and Dental Schools. Waite was the son of Nelson and Cynthia Post Waite, and gathered extensive genealogical information pertaining to the Post family, particularly the children of Zina and Marena Post of Hudson, Ohio. He also collected genealogical information pertaining to the Devol family, which was descended from the Cooke, Soule and Warren families, passengers on the Mayflower. The collection consists of genealogies of the Post and Devol families consisting of correspondence, charts, descent lists, genealogical notes and newspaper clippings. The Post family genealogy highlights particular individuals such as Henry Post, Zina Post, Marena Kellogg Post, Aurelia Post Foote, William Post, Ebenezer and Bradford Post, Anna Post Chamberlain, and Elvira Post Fowler. Genealogical information regarding the related families is included, as well as material pertaining to the Waite family. Included is biographical information regarding Cynthia Post Waite, Frederick C. Waite's mother. The Devol family information is traced back to the Mayflower families of Cooke, Soule, and Warren, and includes information on the origin of the family name.

 Abstract:  The Cleveland Regional Committee of the British War Relief Society was the Cleveland, Ohio, branch of a national organization which raised funds for civilian relief in Britain during World War II. The Cleveland Regional Committee raised funds to aid refugee civilians, supported the American Hospital at Oxford, funded the American Ambulance Service, and supported children's nursery homes throughout England.  Abstract:  Darius Lyman (1789-1867) was a lawyer who came to Ravenna, Ohio, from Connecticut in 1814. He became a state senator and a Portage County judge. His son, Darius Jr., was Chief of the Navigation Division of the United States Treasury Department. His grandson, Henry D. Lyman, was Second Assistant Postmaster General of the United States. John P. Converse was the father-in-law of Darius Lyman, Jr. He came to Parkman, Ohio from Vermont in 1816 and operated several mills with his wife's brother, Robert B. Parkman. Parkman came to Ohio from New York in 1801. He settled Parkman, Ohio and served as its postmaster. He was also a Geauga County Prosecutor (1806-1817) and Probate Judge (1819). The collection consists of correspondence, letter copies, legal documents, estate documents, indentures, land surveys, accounts, receipts, promissory notes, literary works, and personal journals of Robert B. Parkman, John P. Converse, Darius Lyman, Darius Lyman Jr., and Henry Lyman.

 Abstract:  William Ganson Rose (1878-1957) was a noted Cleveland, Ohio, author, historian, lecturer, advertising executive, and civic promoter. In 1915, Rose formed Wm. G. Rose, Inc., his own advertising and public relations firm. He managed numerous fairs and expositions, including the first Cleveland Electrical Exposition (1914), the Gordon Bennett International Balloon Race and Aerial Carnival (1930), the Great Lakes Exposition (1936-1937), and the Cleveland Sesquicentennial (1946). In 1916-1917, Rose chaired the group which promoted and ultimately secured passage of a bond issue financing the construction of the Cleveland Public Auditorium. He served on the board of Hiram House, a Cleveland social settlement founded by George Bellamy in 1896, and belonged to the American Press Humorists and the Cleveland Athletic Club. Rose authored several books and numerous articles for newspapers and magazines, as well as a comprehensive history of Cleveland entitled Cleveland, the making of a city, published in 1950. Rose died in 1957. The collection consists of newspaper clippings, promotional material, correspondence, biographical material, photographs, reports, and historical material pertaining to the history of Cleveland, Ohio and many of its prominent citizens, but also including material on national and international events and personages. Individuals, organizations and events that figure most prominently include: the American Press Humorists, Newton D. Baker, George Bellamy and Hiram House, Charles F. Brush, the Cleveland Sesquicentennial of 1946, the visit to Cleveland of Emile Coue, Thomas A. Edison, the Gordon Bennett International Balloon Race and Aerial Carnival of 1930, Abraham Lincoln, the Cleveland Public Auditorium, John D. Rockefeller, the Cleveland War Service Center, the Cleveland Grays, and the writings of Whiting Williams. Also included is a significant amount of biographical material on numerous women in Cleveland's history, material pertaining to sports, particularly baseball, and material relating to the theater in Cleveland, with newspaper reviews of performances.

 Abstract:  George P. Metcalf (born 1844) was a Liverpool, Ohio, native who served in Company D, 136th Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. During 1869 he practiced law in Mississippi, where he had a strong interest in the attitudes and actions of residents of this state toward Reconstruction.. The collection consists of reminiscences of Metcalf's childhood on a Medina County, Ohio, farm, his student days in Oberlin, and primarily his service during the Civil War, and his experiences as a lawyer in Mississippi during Reconstruction.
