 Abstract:  Willoughby College was an institution of higher learning located in Willoughby, Lake County, Ohio. Incorporated in 1858, the school was known as Willoughby Collegiate Institute until April 1868, when it became Willoughby College. The college operated under the auspices of the Erie Annual Conference of the Methodist-Episcopal Church, which built the co-educational Institute on the site of the former Willoughby Medical College on the Willoughby town square. It lapsed into a prep school in 1869, with college and high school students studying under the same roof until 1882, when the last college class graduated. The collection consists of a constitution, subscription lists, trustees' minutes, principals' reports, financial accounts, receipts, contracts, and correspondence relating to this college. Also included are records pertaining to the estate of Benjamin Woolsey, one of the original incorporators of the university, and of his wife Kezia Woolsey, 1861-1870.

 Abstract:  Philander Hayden Standish (1835-1918) was a mechanical engineer and inventor. He was active in several cities in California, Missouri, and Ohio before settling in Cleveland, Ohio, He was the owner or co-owner of several manufacturing companies which were involved in the making of steel chains, including the Standish Chain Company of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio in the early 1880s; the Bimel-Standish Company of St. Mary's, Ohio in the 1890s; and the Standish Chain and Manufacturing Company of Kent, Ohio, in the 1900s. Among the letters patent issued to Standish by Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Belgium, German, and Sweden were those for his invention of a chain-making machine, a treadle mechanism for sewing machines, and a steam cultivator for improved methods in tethering horses, welding chain links, and coiling metal rods. The business associates with whom he corresponded include J. B. Carey, president of the Chain Makers National Union. The collection consists of correspondence, letters patent, contracts and agreements, notebooks, specifications and price lists for various types of chain, drawings of steam generators and steam plows, time and account books, and other papers, relating to Standish's activities as owner of several manufacturing companies involved in the making of steel chains, including Standish Chain Company, Bimel-Standish Company, and Standish Chain and Manufacturing Company. Correspondents include J.B. Carey, president of the Chain Makers National Union.

His son, Jerome S. Burrows, was a student at Western Reserve College (late 1870s) and proprietor of The Painesville Telegraph. The collection consists of letters to Jerome B. and Jerome S. Burrows and other members of their family concerning personal and legal matters, the operation of The Painesville Telegraph, Republican Party politics in Lake County, Ohio, and political and economic affairs in Kansas and Iowa during the mid-1850s. Correspondents include Julius C. Burrows, Ezra B. Taylor, S.H. Tolles, and other United States Representatives, judges, and lawyers.

 Abstract:  John Devereux was a sea captain of Marblehead, Mass. John H. Devereux was an American Civil War general, engineer, railroad executive, and philanthropist, of Cleveland, Ohio. Henry K. Devereux was an engineer, real estate agent, industrialist, philanthropist, and harness-horse fancier, of Cleveland. The collection consists of correspondence, diaries, business, financial, and legal documents, genealogical data, ship's logs, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, and other papers, of John Devereux, John H. Devereux, and Henry K. Devereux. Bulk of the collection relates to railroad construction and John H. Devereux's career with several railroads. Includes records (1895-1916) of the Gentlemen's Driving Club, and material relating to Henry K. Devereux's interest in trotting horses and harness racing and his activities as an official of several businesses. The collection also documents the role played by the railroad for the Union during the American Civil War.

Includes proof copy of an article on "Notices of the Minor of Aboriginal Art," notes on the Inca Empire, and a ms. copy of "A Trip in Salvador," describing a journey from La Union to San Vicente.
