Clement Vallandigham married Rebecca Laird in 1807 and moved to New Lisbon, Ohio. The Vallandigham and Laird families had members in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Most prominent among them was Clement Laird Vallandigham, a lawyer, Democratic politician, congressman from Ohio, and spokesman of Northerners opposing the Civil War, and John Laird, a lawyer and Ohio senator.
