Students designed their own courses and arranged to study with community resource people. Holistic education was stressed as well as learning basic survival skills. The school was run democratically and students had half of the votes on council. The school ceased operations in 1982 due to lack of funds. | | | | Creator: | Lake Erie Regional Transportation Authority | | | | Dates: | 1968-1978 | | | | Abstract: | The Lake Erie Regional Transportation Authority was created by the Cuyahoga County (Ohio) Board of Commissioners in 1972 to study the need, feasibility, and location for a new international airport for the Cleveland service area. Urged on by the Greater Cleveland Growth Association, LERTA proposed the construction of a 13-mile stone-and-sand dike in Lake Erie as the site for the new airport. Despite an extensive public relations campaign, public opposition to the project was immediate and continuous. In 1977, the FAA determined that Cleveland did not need a new airport and in 1978 discontinued its support for the jetport-in-the-lake project. The collection consists of administrative records (i.e. LERTA formation and dissolution records, minutes of the Board of Trustees, initial planning grant proposals, citizen participation records, intergovernmental and departmental relations activity, etc.), consultant selection records, airport feasibility studies, and publicity and public relations records. The collection contains detailed engineering proposals for large-scale off-shore airport construction, and public opposition to such a project. Hardman began his own public relations and advertising company, Anson F. Hardman and Associates, in 1951. He also served in various editorial and advertising capacities for the periodical Inside Ohio. The collection consists of scripts and script drafts, administrative papers, correspondence, story ideas and suggestions, research articles, subject lists, broadcast material, clippings, music scores, photographs, and biographical information relating to the activities of Anson Hardman. The collection pertains largely to the development of radio programing, from original idea to final casting, broadcast, and publicity. | | | | Creator: | Cleveland: NOW! | | | | Dates: | 1967-1977 | | | | Abstract: | Cleveland: NOW! was a multiracial joint public and private program for extensive urban renewal and revitalization in Cleveland, Ohio, created by Mayor Carl B. Stokes following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4, 1968. The program planned to raise $1.5 billion over ten years. The first 2-year phase called for spending $177 million for projects in eight areas: neighborhood housing rehabilitation; accelerated urban renewal; the creation of 16,000 jobs; expansion of small business opportunities; city planning; health, welfare, and day care centers; summer recreation programs for youth; and the construction of Camp Cleveland. The program was discredited due to the Glenville Shootout of July 23, 1968, a gun battle between police and members of the Black Nationalists Organization of New Libya who obtained weapons with funds received indirectly from Cleveland: NOW! Stokes and the NOW! trustees were sued in 1970 by 8 policemen wounded in the shootout, but the suit was dismissed in 1977. Although Cleveland: NOW! met many of its initial goals, the organization ceased activities for the most part after 1970, and was formally dissolved in 1980. The collection consists of articles of incorporation, minutes, board of trustees records, correspondence, financial records, records of the major programs, publicity information, newspaper clippings, and proceedings of lawsuits. The collection pertains to a dramatic, multiracial attempt on a large scale to address and ameliorate a wide range of social ills by initial infusions of large amounts of money. By the mid-1950s, however, the local had absorbed several units of Local 38, and included manufacturing units, maintenance units and radio and sound units, including appliance repairmen and mobile/microwave technicians. Peter J. Zicarelli served as business manager, 1950-1970s. The local was involved in jurisdictional disputes with Local 38 and representational disputes with the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America and with independent workers' organizations such as the Electrical Workers Alliance at Leece-Neville and the Picker X-Ray Employees Union. The collection consists of minutes, correspondence, reports, contracts and agreements, financial records, membership rosters, grievance and arbitration proceedings, civil litigation records, organizing files, newspapers and periodicals. The collection focuses on the day-to-day operations of an amalgamated local, with the various problems accompanying a mixed membership, and includes material on the jurisdictional disputes with IBEW Local 38 and the representational disputes with the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America, as well as labor-management conflicts and general conditions in the Cleveland electric industries, especially General Electric, Leece-Neville, Westinghouse and Picker X-Ray. Edward and Thelma Frazier Winter were successful and popular artists in Cleveland, Ohio, during the period 1932-1976. Edward, whose legal name was H. Edward, was primarily an enamellist, and his wife Thelma was a ceramic sculptor. Edward studied in Vienna, Austria, and introduced many simple sifting techniques he learned there to the United States. He was the first to use enameling to make large bowls and plates of enamel on copper, and murals on copper and steel. He was associated with the Ferro Corporation in Cleveland for many years. Thelma pioneered ceramic sculpture in glaze and color in the U.S. and was also involved with Edward in creating many large enamel murals for churches and corporations. Both taught and wrote quite extensively, and their work was exhibited widely and often. Edward served as a technical illustrator for the army during World War II. The collection consists of biographical information, writings, correspondence, publications, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks. The collection pertains to the Winters' art work during the period 1932-76, and the presence of the various writings makes it useful for understanding new methods and techniques of enamel and ceramic art introduced by them. The correspondence is useful for understanding the day-to-day activities of the operation of an arts and crafts business, as well as the personal relationship of the Winters during World War II and the lives of soldiers who remained on the home front. | | | | Creator: | Stamm, Morris and Eleanor | | | | Dates: | 1936-1986 | | | | Abstract: | Morris and Elanor Stamm were labor, peace, civil rights and political activists from Cleveland, Ohio. Morris Stamm emigrated from Russia and came to Cleveland in 1916, where he was a laborer for 61 years. He joined the Communist Party in 1928 and was a shop floor organizer for the United Electrical Workers (UEW) in the Cleveland area. Stamm fought as a foot soldier with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in the Spanish Civil War from 1937-1938. He married Eleanor Ginsberg in 1940. In 1949, Stamm was fined and jailed for picketing violations in a bitter strike of the Fawick-Airflex company called by Local 735 of the UEW. In the 1970s, Morris and Eleanor led the Cleveland Committee for a Democratic Spain, and were highly involved in the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. Eleanor was politically active throughout her life, holding memberships in the American Youth Congress, the Young Communist League and the Youth Committee of the American League Against War and Fascism. The collection consists of material relating to the Abraham Lincoln Brigade and the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, including English- and Spanish-language publications, correspondence, minutes, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, newsletters, propaganda, posters, paintings, programs, reports and research papers. The collection also contains similar document types pertaining to other activities and organizations the Stamms were involved in, especially the United States Committee for a Democratic Spain. Included is material re: the strike of the Fawick-Airflex Co. in 1949, personal manuscripts and writings, and material pertaining to politics in the Cleveland metro area during the 1970s. The collection consists of correspondence, receipts, legal documents and military muster rolls. The collection consists primarily of sporadic correspondence between Pinkerton family members in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Kentucky. | | | | Creator: | Acme-Cleveland Corporation | | | | Dates: | 1869-1982 | | | | Abstract: | The Acme-Cleveland Corporation was formed In Cleveland, Ohio, by the merger in 1968 of Cleveland Twist Drill Company, a manufacturer of high-speed drills and metal cutting tools, and the National Acme Company, a manufacturer of automatic multiple-spindle lathes and screw machines. Cleveland Twist Drill was founded in 1876 by Jacob D. Cox II, son of a Civil War general and former governor of Ohio. The company became a leader in the manufacture of superior-grade high-speed twist drills and pioneered the development of steels made of molybdenum as a substitute for tungsten. By 1936 it was the world's largest maker of high-speed drills and reamers, flourishing under Jacob D. Cox, Jr., who pioneered profit-sharing and authored two books on wage theory. National Acme originated as the Acme Screw Machine Company in 1895, makers of the first commercially successful automatic multiple-spindle screw manufacturing machine. Acme Screw merged with National Manufacturing Co. in 1901 to become National Acme Manufacturing Company, which purchased the Windsor Machine Company to become National Acme Company in 1916. The collection consists of histories, correspondence, writings by company executives, especially J.D. Cox, Jr., articles of incorporation, annual reports, ledger books, publications, such as catalogs, brochures and company newsletters, records of acquisitions and subsidiary firms, and newspaper clippings, pertaining to the Cleveland Twist Drill Co., National Acme Co., and Acme-Cleveland Corp., and to their predecessor firms. The collection traces the development of a major Cleveland machine-tool corporation, as well as developments within the metal-cutting and machine-tool industries in Cleveland and the U.S. during their formative years, and, in particular, to the very important decade of 1942-52. The collection also details the lives of Jacob D. Cox II and his son Jacob D. Bosworth and known as Burrows-Bosworth Hardware Company until 1905. The company apparently specialized in industrial supplies and had accounts with such companies as Ohio Bell Telephone, Western Electric, Lake Erie Glass, Cleveland Paper and Warner and Swasey. The collection consists of financial records, including of account books, indexes to account books, and cash journals. Included are external and internal accounts, with dates and amounts for merchandise, advertising, labor, tools, charity and other expenses. Jardine was manager of Alcoa's Cleveland Developmental Division, 1940-1953, and held numerous patents for automobile parts manufactured from aluminum. In the late 1920s, Jardine helped to develop the Peerless V-16, a luxury automobile made from aluminum components, but the car never went into production. Worthington also served as chairman of the Farms Committee, a 1933 program to provide jobs for unemployed Clevelanders. The collection consists of correspondence, reports and publications. The collection pertains primarily to Worthington's work with the Cleveland Boys' Bureau, as its president and chief fund raiser. The correspondence includes material from the Boys' Clubs of America and Union League Foundation of Boys' Clubs, as well as Dudley S. Blossom, a prominent Cleveland philanthropist.
