1981Title:  Cleveland Society Records

 Abstract:  The Cleveland Society was founded in 1923 and composed of American businessmen and professionals of Polish descent in the Cleveland, Ohio, area who promoted citizenship and fostered the language, traditions and culture of Poland. The group was a spin-off organization of the Polish National Alliance. In addition to sponsoring an annual debutante ball, the membership raised money for Marymount Hospital in Garfield Heights, Ohio. The collection consists of a constitution, membership roster, minutes, correspondence, programs, newsletters, and newspaper clippings. The collection is relevant to the study of an elite ethnic social club that tried to assimilate some of the characteristics of upper class American society while simultaneously retaining their cultural identity.

 Abstract:  Arthur A. Miller was a Cleveland, Ohio, lawyer with a particular interest in the corruption of Cleveland banks during the 1930s. The collection consists of scrapbooks of newspaper clippings relating to bank corruption and a wide variety of other Cleveland topics, especially legal cases Miller found interesting. The collection has value for those interested in legal battles in Cleveland during the 1930s and 1940s, some of which were bank-related cases.

 Abstract:  Mary Doan Taylor was a Cleveland, Ohio, resident whose ancestors were early Cleveland and East Cleveland settlers. Both Doan's Corners and Doan Brook were named for Nathaniel Doan, an ancestor of Mary Doan Taylor, and the First Presbyterian Church in East Cleveland was founded and supported by the family. The collection consists of the genealogy of the Taylor, Wilder, Doan and Adams ancestors of Mary Doan Taylor, which includes material on the early settlement of the Cleveland area and history of East Cleveland's First Presbyterian Church.

 Abstract:  William Mumford Gregory (1876-1974) was a Michigan native who became a high school teacher and lecturer on economic geography in Cleveland, Ohio. He did extensive geological research on the areas around Lake Erie, both in Ohio and Michigan. The collection consists of geological writings, correspondence, charts, and maps detailing Gregory's research findings. The collection is valuable to the study of the geology of Lake Huron, Saginaw Bay, and Michigan.

 Abstract:  Richard L. Maher (1903-1972) was a political editor for the Cleveland Press for over 40 years, covering local, state and national government. After working for the Cleveland News, Maher joined the Cleveland Press in 1928, became assistant city editor in 1929, and politics editor in 1932. He was active in Catholic Charities and helped found St. Raphael Parish in Bay Village, Ohio. He co-authored two books with Robert S. Allen, Our Fair City, and, Our Sovereign State. The collection consists of correspondence, programs, speeches, notes on columns, and newspaper clippings. The collection is useful to the study of Maher's life and interest in government and the attitudes exhibited in the Cleveland Press concerning political issues and their coverage.

1986Title:  Franklin Jeremiah Drake Papers

 Abstract:  Franklin Jeremiah Drake (1846-1929) was a United States naval officer who served fifty-two years in the U.S. Navy, retiring as a rear admiral. He engineered the first survey of the Isthmus of Panama for the Panama Canal in 1896 and assisted in charting the Bering Sea after the U.S. acquired Alaska from Russia. At one time he served on the U.S.S. Constitution, "Old Ironsides". The collection consists of biographical sketch, correspondence, certificates of membership in various organizations, a speech given at a G.A.R meeting, notes from a cruise of the Pacific Ocean, including a journal kept by Mrs. Drake, some military papers, newspaper clippings, and some diplomas of Nellie Pierson, whose connection to Drake has not been established.

 Abstract:  Shirley R. Parsons compiled genealogical materials on the John Parsons family of Maine, whose members migrated to Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Kentucky and Missouri. The collection consists of typed copies of letters written 1828-1904 by family members and genealogical notes on the Parsons family and the related Robinson and Stevens families. The collection is valuable for those interested in the westward migration from Maine during the first half of the 19th century and also includes details of pioneer life in Lancaster, Ohio and various parts of Illinois, Wisconsin, Kentucky and Missouri.

 Abstract:  Peter Musser (ca. 1782-1852) was an officer in the War of 1812 who moved to Columbiana County, Ohio, from Frederick County, Maryland. In the 1820s he moved his family to Trumbull County, Ohio. The collection consists of correspondence, legal agreements, deeds, indentures and miscellaneous items, such as a marriage agreement, land grant, and an invitation to the funeral of James Peter Mercer (Musser), the son of Peter Musser. The collection pertains to the Musser family and other early settlers of Columbiana and Trumbull counties, Ohio. Many of the deeds and agreements are in the collection because Peter Musser witnessed them. An inventory included in the collection lists all the names from these documents. Also included is a Civil War letter written to James Banning of the 28th Pennsylvania Infantry.

The collection consists of an entry form for the Right to Counsel Award and includes statements, correspondence and newspaper clippings explaining the Bar's action in defending nine indigent communist defendants in the Ohio Smith Act trial in 1956.

 Abstract:  George W. Beadle was an American Civil War soldier who served in the 10th Regiment of Ohio Infantry, and later, in the 18th Independent Battery of Ohio Light Artillery. After the war he settled in Plainwell, Michigan. The collection consists of correspondence, Civil War military records, a certificate designating Beadle as a notary public, copies of Bible lessons, and a receipt. The collection pertains primarily to the Civil War experiences of Beadle and his wife, Rachel Smith, and includes correspondence which reflects the effects of the war on the personal lives of the soldiers and their families. In addition there is some information on Beadle's military units.

The collection consists of correspondence and reports relating to various committees and councils organized to benefit Ohio's senior citizens. The records pertain to the efforts to aid low-income elderly in the Greater Cleveland area, particularly the nutrition program directed by Russell Davis as a means of implementing the Federal Nutrition Program for the Elderly.

Included are a Cleveland Normal school catalog, 1914-1915, and a yearbook, 1916, and a Cleveland School of Education notebook, 1918.

 Abstract:  John Spence immigrated from England in the mid-nineteenth century and worked as a stone contractor. John M. Spence was the first mayor of Cleveland Heights, Ohio (1904-1907), served eighteen years on the Cleveland Heights Board of Education and was active in the state Republican Party executive committee. Along with his three brothers he operated Spence Brothers Construction Company. His nephew, Stanley L. Orr served with Troop A Cavalry Regiment in the Texas-Mexican border dispute of 1916-1917 and was a judge and chairman of the Cleveland Chapter of the Red Cross during World War I. The collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, financial records, and a scrapbook. The collection illustrates the activities of Troop A during the Southwest Expedition, 1916-1917, the business activities of John Spence in the late nineteenth century, and the growth and development of the Spence Brothers Construction Company.
