 Abstract:  The Cleveland Commission on Higher Education is a cooperative organization of universities and colleges in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, devoted to common problem solving and the promotion of higher education in the area. The commission helps to assess needs and eliminate the duplication of programs, coordinates educational efforts, and works to further education in general. The collection consists of a copy of the organization's regulations, minutes, biographical sketches of the executive director and the trustees, reports, correspondence, news releases, memoranda, interviews with members, publications, and miscellaneous material.

 Abstract:  Joseph S. Unzicker (born 1813) German-born physician from Cincinnati, Ohio, who was particularly interested in the "holy stones" found near Newark, Ohio in 1860. The collection consists of a scrapbook of newspaper clippings relating to the "holy stones" and containing drawings by Unzicker and David Wyrick. These stones were believed to be relics of the Lost Tribes of Israel. The scrapbook is thought to have been put together by Unzicker, but this cannot be definitely ascertained.

 Abstract:  The Old Yellow Store was a general store located in Merryfield Corners (renamed Mantua Corners), Portage County, Ohio. Founded by William Skinner about 1827, it was later taken over by Joseph Skinner. The collection consists of photocopies of two account books kept by the proprietors of the store. The books serve as a record of all bills owed to the store and are particularly valuable since they list the residents of the area.

1965Title:  Pelatiah Adams Account Book

 Abstract:  Pelatiah Adams was a physician who practiced medicine in Geauga County, Ohio, from 1818 until his death in 1856. The collection consists of an account book detailing Dr. Adams' house calls, prescriptions, bills owed and paid by patients. In addition, the book contains a brief tract Adams wrote on his religious beliefs. In general, the collection's greatest value is as a source of social history, providing information on the medical practice of a 19th century doctor in the rural Western Reserve. It also sheds light on the various ailments suffered by people of the times and the cures prescribed.

The collection consists of a lease for Heneage House in England to Isaac Pennington, a marriage announcement for Irene Pennington and Harold Cushing Schofield, a brief genealogy of the Pennington and Linville families, and Irene Pennington's certificates and diplomas.

 Abstract:  Elijah Ford Young (born 1827) was a Geauga County, Ohio, resident who served as the Young family historian. He was the grandson of Joseph Young of Southold, Long Island and the great-grandson of Reverend John Youngs, an English immigrant who settled on Long Island in 1640. The collection consists of photocopies of speeches delivered at family reunions, 1890-1893, and notes on the family history and genealogy. The collection pertains to the history and genealogy of the Joseph Young family.

 Abstract:  The Sohl Family is a Cleveland, Ohio, family of German-Americans, descended from Johann Georg Sohl (anglicized to George Sohl) who settled in Cleveland in 1840. His son, Gustav, married Mary Goodrich, whose father, George Elliott Goodrich, served in the 124th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War and was one of the soldiers assigned to escort the body of President Lincoln from Washington to Illinois. His grandson, Ralph William Sohl, was an engineer for a tire and rubber company. The collection consists of George Sohl's passport and related papers, his will, Sohl family correspondence, deeds and other records relating to property in Egg Harbor, N.J., cemetery lot purchase records, birth and death certificates for Ralph William Sohl, and Goodrich family papers, including a marriage certificate, civil war correspondence, and a copy of the order for troops to accompany Lincoln's body to Illinois. Included in the correspondence is a letter from George Goodrich expressing his feelings about the assassination of Lincoln.

 Abstract:  Housing Our People Economically, Inc., was a non-profit organization founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1965 to rehabilitate existing houses and build new ones for residents of Cleveland's Hough neighborhood. It depended on government and foundation grants for much of its support, and, by the mid-1970s, owned and managed over 250 units of housing. The group floundered in 1984 after reports of corruption and poor management made it difficult to obtain adequate funding. The group was known as HOPE. The collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, press releases, proposals, reports, information about property holdings, a subject file, blueprints, and newspaper clippings.

 Abstract:  Eli Bond, his father Thomas Bond, and brother Moses Bond were early settlers in Geauga County, Ohio. They owned land in Bondstown, now Hambden Township, and Eli opened the first store in Painesville and served as Geauga County sheriff, 1815-1818. William L. Perkins acted as the family's agent in land transactions. The collection consists of correspondence between family members, deeds and receipts. The collection primarily concerns the everyday activities of the family members, land speculation and the early settlement of Geauga County, Ohio.

 Abstract:  Jay Terrell (1827-1904) was the grandson of Ichabod and Rhoda Terrell, early Lorain County, Ohio, settlers who migrated from Waterbury, Conn. in 1810. Jay was a farmer early in his life, but later became the Ohio manager for the publisher W.J. Holland & Co. He corresponded frequently with family members and compiled genealogical notes for a family history. His son, Clay Terrell (1849-1934), continued his genealogical work after Jay's death. Much of their work was compiled in an unpublished volume, Notes on the Terrell family. The collection consists of correspondence from family members and genealogical notes of Jay Terrell and his son, Clay.

 Abstract:  Thomas C. Willard (1863-1932) was made Commissioner of the United States Circuit Court for the Northern District of Ohio in 1892. He was married to Lucy B. Willard. The Willards owned land in North Beaver Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, and lived in Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of indentures, slave bills of sale, deeds, mortgages, wills, certificates, correspondence, commencement programs of the Cleveland High Schools and other schools (1875-76), and a manual of the Case Avenue Presbyterian Church. Some of the material relates to the financial transactions of William Pippin, a prominent Kentucky landowner, possibly a relative of Willard's.

 Abstract:  Carl J. Stark (1896-1974) was a Cleveland, Ohio, dentist and president of the Northern Ohio Dental Association at the time of its dissolution in 1943. Educated at the Western Reserve University Dental School in 1918, Stark was also president of the Ohio State Dental Association in 1958. The collection consists of materials pertaining to the demise of the Northern Ohio Dental Association (NODA), NODA meeting programs, general correspondence of Carl J. Stark, and meeting programs of the Ohio State Dental Association.

 Abstract:  Ernest R. Ball (1878-1927) was a well-known composer and singer, a native of Cleveland, Ohio. Among his most popular songs were "When Irish eyes are smiling" and "Mother Machree", a tribute to his mother. The collection consists of a biographical sketch, performance contracts, Ball family correspondence, announcements of performances, a list of Ball's songs, a proclamation of Ernest R. Ball Days in Cleveland, 1966, correspondence and other material relating to memorial tributes, and news clippings. The material pertains to the musical career of Ball and also illuminates the relationships between Ball and his family, particularly with his mother, Anna Krocker Ball, and his son, Roland Ball.

 Abstract:  Sydney Hesse was an Ohio state legislator from Cleveland, serving 1932-1936. During his tenure the legislature considered a ten percent tax on movie tickets and a general sales tax. The collection consists of an election certificate, campaign materials, constituent correspondence, legislation information, newspaper clippings, and a business card for the law firm of Hesse, Carney, Glick and Farina. The collection deals with Hesse's brief political career and the issues he faced as a legislator. The material also serves as an example of public opinion on the proposed movie tax and the sales tax proposal of 1933. The collection does not, however, indicate Hesse's position on these issues.

 Abstract:  Florence Sadler Strimple (1865-ca. 1938) was a Bay Village, Ohio, resident who compiled much material on her ancestors, the Sadler, Lilly, Shook and Tryon families. The collection consists of correspondence, biographical and historical sketches, genealogies and genealogical notes, legal documents, and clippings concerning the Sadler, Lilly, Shook and Tryon families. The collection primarily pertains to the genealogy of these families, but also includes local history of Bay Village and the Rocky River Valley. Of particular interest are the family stories relating to pioneer life in the Western Reserve.
