 Abstract:  The Cleveland Bar Assocaition (f. 1873) is an organization of of Cleveland, Ohio, lawyers whose purpose is to maintain the honor and dignity of the law profession and promote legal and judicial reform. Operating via a series of committees, the association over the years has investigated misconduct by lawyers, judges, sheriffs, and police, which has resulted in resignations and/or disbarment. The collection consists of minutes, agendas, financial materials, correspondence, memoranda, directories, records of the Court Management Project, a subject file, scrapbooks and issues of the Cleveland Bar Association journal. The collection is useful for understanding the activities and interests of the association, including the Court Management Project, 1970-76, which explored judicial reform in Cuyahoga County courts, and illuminates some of the controversy which surrounded the "deregulation" of the profession, such as the advertising of legal services.

 Abstract:  Leon A. Kujawski (b. 1883) was a Cleveland, Ohio, lawyer, politician, and judge of Polish birth. Kujawski began practicing law in 1913, specializing in labor law, became a municipal court judge in 1933, then served two terms as a city councilman representing the Tremont area of Cleveland. He served on the state liquor control board, 1938-1939. The collection consists of a biography, correspondence, an affidavit, miscellaneous campaign material, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks. The collection contains information about Kujawski's terms as city councilman, especially his fight to lower bus fares, and his activities on the Liquor Control Board.

 Abstract:  The National One Cent Letter Postage Association was a Cleveland, Ohio, based group which advocated reducing the cost of mailing letters from two cents to one cent. The group wrote to senators and representatives to encourage them to vote for the reduction and encouraged other people to write to congressmen, President Wilson and the Postmaster General. The collection consists of correspondence, announcements to members, and information distributed to the public expressing the views of the group.

 Abstract:  The Community Fighters for Housing for Large Families was a self-help group which tried to assist large, low-income families in the inner-city of Cleveland, Ohio, find adequate housing. It maintained listings of available homes, assisted with the bureaucracy of federal housing programs, and held educational seminars on housing issues. It was directed by Reverend Doris Gilmer. The collection consists of grant proposals, correspondence, an organizational outline, case histories, a biography of Rev. Gilmer, and some miscellaneous items.

The collection consists of Chapman's dissertation, the manuscript to his book, journal articles, lecture notes, and student papers.

 Abstract:  Fannie M. Lewis (1926-2008) was an African American activist and Cleveland, Ohio, councilwoman. She was involved in a number of Hough neighborhood improvement programs, including Community Action for Youth, Neighborhood Youth Corps, Model Cities Association, and the Citizen's Participation Organization. She became a city councilwoman from Cleveland's Ward 7 in 1982. The collection consists of personal papers and the records and subject files relating to Lewis' work with the Model Cities Association, Neighborhood Youth Corps, and other community organizations. Included are articles of incorporation, bylaws, trustee minutes, monthly reports, financial records, proposals, correspondence, memoranda, residency lists, posters, and newspaper clippings. The collection is useful to the study of Cleveland community development programs and Fanny Lewis' efforts with these programs. Some materials relate to racism, politics, and local government in Cleveland during the 1960s and 1970s.

 Abstract:  Emily Newell Blair was a suffragist, feminist, Democratic Party official, mother and writer. During World War I she worked in the press department of the Missouri Woman's Committee of the Council of National Defense, eventually becoming vice chair. Representing Missouri on the Democratic National Committee, Blair was chosen national vice chair responsible for organizing women voters and women's activities, and eventually rose to first vice president, organized 2,000 plus Democratic women's clubs, and helped found the Woman's National Democratic Club. In 1935, she was appointed to the Consumers' Advisory Board of the National Recovery Administration, and, in 1942, was appointed chief of the Women's Interest Section of the War Department's Public Relations Bureau. Her husband, Harry Wallace Blair, was U.S. Assistant Attorney General in the Land Div. of the Justice Dept. in the 1930s and later served with the President's Loyalty Review Board. The collection consists of personal, professional and family correspondence, published and unpublished writings by and about Emily Blair, diaries, speeches, personal and family memorabilia, and clippings. Series I and II form the bulk of the collection, Series II being largely Emily Blair's personal writings, such as diaries, speeches, published articles, typescripts of fiction and non-fiction, and typescripts of her autobiography. Blair family material consists of the papers of Harry Wallace Blair (husband), Harriet Blair Forsythe (daughter), James Patton and Anna Gray Newell (parents), and her McDowell family ancestors of Pennsylvania, particularly the correspondence of Alexander McDowell. The collection is useful for researching the history of women and the family in the early 20th century, the issues of feminism and women's suffrage, and the emergence of women as politicians within the Democratic Party. Notable correspondents include Cordell Hull, Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman. McDowell family materials chronicle pioneer life on the 18th-century Pennsylvania frontier.

 Abstract:  Winifred Wolcott (1879-1946) was a genealogist from Medina County, Ohio. Wolcott compiled a great deal of information on her ancestral families, most of whom came from New England. The collection consists of correspondence, writings, family histories, hereditary society applications, cemetery records, marriage records, and papers of Mrs. Wolcott's maternal ancestors, the Kings and the Porters. Includes correspondence, transcripts of letters, notices of payments from the U.S. Postal Service, excerpts from the Windfall, a newspaper edited by Cyrus King, and miscellaneous material.

 Abstract:  Gilbert Chapman (1811-1897) and his wife Jane were farmers in Ashtabula County, Ohio. Their Ward, Charles Warring, assumed ownership of their land upon the death of Gilbert in 1897 and served as an Ashtabula County assessor, 1904-1912. The collection consists of correspondence, 1834-1914, from friends and relatives, a copy of a family ledger of births and deaths, purchase receipts, billing statements, and advertising circulars for farm equipment. The collection contains numerous references to farm life and general conditions in areas of Ohio, Louisiana, California and New York and includes a large collection of advertising literature containing information on turn of the century farm equipment.

 Abstract:  The collection consists of 39 oral history interviews conducted by Jeanette Tuve with individuals and representatives of long-established Cleveland, Ohio, families who have played significant roles in the city's growth and development and with several Cleveland philanthropic foundation administrators. The interviews focused on the philanthropic involvement of these families and reveal the continuity of philanthropic motivation between generations of a particular family and the shared interest between related families and social peers in specific areas of charitable activity. The project was sponsored by the Western Reserve Historical Society and funded by the William Bingham Foundation.

 Abstract:  Norman Day was a farmer in Lorain County, Ohio, where his father, Captain John Day, settled in 1815. His wife, Julia Ann Root, was the daughter of Henry and Mary Root, early settlers in Sheffield Township, Lorain County. Norman's son, Richard Day, served as county auditor in 1861. The collection consists of correspondence, an account book, receipts, and memorabilia, including a history of Sheffield Township, Ohio. The collection pertains primarily to family relationships in the early Western Reserve, particularly in Sheffield Township, and land purchases in the Midwestern frontier.

 Abstract:  Halina Swidzinska was a Polish journalist and professor of Slavic languages at Alliance College, Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania. Swidzinska was a free-lance journalist for Radio Free Europe. She came to the United States in 1961 where she studied and taught Slavic languages and literature, and continued to publish in Polish emigre journals throughout the United States, Canada, Great Britain, West Germany and France. In 1975 she retired to the Netherlands. The collection consists of autobiographical materials and articles written by Swidzinska for the Polish press in America and Europe, and for Radio Free Europe.

 Abstract:  Alexander Ostrow was an award-winning investigative reporter, working for the Cleveland Press, 1951-1964. He later became a public relations officer and then an administrative aide to Congressman Ron Mottl. His wife, Thelma Swank Ostrow, was an employee counselor for Vultee Aircraft Corporation, developing a counselor training course designed to aid women entering the work force during World War II. She later worked for Cleary Realty in Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of biographical material, a diary, and scrapbooks of newspaper articles written by Alexander Ostrow, primarily on Cleveland topics. Also, clippings and speeches of Thelma Ostrow and a 1944 counselor's manual for Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation, San Diego. The collection pertains primarily to Al Ostrow's career as a journalist at the Cleveland Press and specifically to his coverage of the Sam Sheppard murder trial, the 1951 concrete "shakedown" of Auditor Joseph T.
