1881Title:  Northern Ohio Lung Association Records

 Abstract:  The Northern Ohio Lung Association was founded in 1904 in Cleveland, Ohio, and was originally known as the Anti-Tuberculosis League. The group was active in the fight against tuberculosis in the Cleveland area before expanding its work to encompass other respiratory diseases. In 1973 the group became the Northern Ohio Lung Association. The collection consists of minutes, financial records, committee materials, Christmas seal sales material, scrapbooks, and a subject file regarding tuberculosis control in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, and Ohio. Also included are minutes and annual reports of the Ohio Tuberculosis and Health Association. The collection is useful for understanding the daily operations and overall goals of a private, nonprofit health organization and gives insight into fundraising and the problem of tuberculosis detection and control in the Cleveland area. Included are materials relating to the history and operation of Sunny Acres, a sanatorium affiliated with the Anti-Tuberculosis League. The relationship between the League and the Ohio Tuberculosis and Health Association is also documented.

 Abstract:  Founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1929, The Crusaders, Inc., was an anti-prohibition group that campaigned for the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution through popular mass education. The Crusaders were led by Fred G. Clark and several young Cleveland businessmen and claimed to have chapters in 100 cities. They sponsored radio debates and political candidates. The collection consists of a report on the effectiveness of the banning of alcohol, comparing the situation in the United States with that of other countries and concluding that prohibition should be repealed for tax revenue, as well as social reasons.

 Abstract:  The Veterans of Battery A, First Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery was an organization of Cleveland, Ohio, veterans who saw service with Battery A of the First Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery. Those who served in the Spanish-American War were known as the Battery A Society of '98. The collection consists of minutes, announcements, correspondence, obituaries and newspaper clippings pertaining to the veterans who were members of this group, especially those of the Spanish-American War.

 Abstract:  Leonard Colton Hanna, Jr. (1889-1957) was the director of M.A. Hanna & Company, a coal and iron ore shipping concern started by his father, and uncles. Hanna was a major philanthropist in Cleveland, Ohio, donating over $90 million to Cleveland's cultural and charitable institutions. Hanna was an avid art collector and a trustee and principal benefactor of the Cleveland Museum of Art, but also supported the Cleveland Playhouse, University Hospitals, Karamu House and others. The collection consists of two ledger books detailing his income and expenses, including dividends and donations. These ledgers are useful for understanding the personal wealth of one of Cleveland's major philanthropists.

 Abstract:  The C. O. Bartlett & Co. was a Cleveland, Ohio, company which sold heavy machinery and manufactured power transmission equipment, boilers, conveying and elevating equipment, and special products, including machinery to process oatmeal. In 1961 the company was sold to Pacific Foundry and Metallurgy, becoming Bartlett-Snow Pacific, Inc., and was later merged into Bangor Punta of Greenwich, Conn. The collection consists of two company histories, a detailed order record book, 1915-1927, and a daily order book, 1917-1927. The collection is useful for the study of the heavy machinery business in Cleveland and their customers' orders, which included sales to such firms as Chevrolet Motor Company, Goodyear, U.S. Aluminum, M.A. Hanna Company, Proctor and Gamble, General Electric, Penzoil, Standard Oil of Ohio and others.

 Abstract:  William Carl Sandberg (1894-1978) was a businessman, political activist, and Cleveland, Ohio, social gadfly during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. He was a union organizer, led the Ohio Hunger March in 1931, and ran for Congress on the Communist Party ticket in the 1930s. In 1961 he wrote a play, Rotten Righteousness, which he later adapted into a screenplay. Over the years he wrote countless letters to public officials and local newspapers concerning political and social matters, ranging from U.S. involvement in southeast Asia to Legionnaires' disease. The collection consists of correspondence, personal documents and identification cards, clippings, his funeral eulogy, and the scripts of Sandberg's play and screenplay. Included in the correspondence are copies of letters from notable figures such as Carl Sandburg, Maxwell Bodenheim and John Glenn. The collection is useful to the study of Cleveland and Ohio politics, political agitation during the 1930s, and the U.S. Communist Party.

1888Title:  Cleveland Newspaper Guild, Local 1 Records

 Abstract:  The Cleveland Newspaper Guild, Local 1 was founded in 1933 in Cleveland, Ohio, and chartered in 1934. Editorial employees of the Cleveland Press and Cleveland News had previously organized in 1933 as the Cleveland Editorial Workers Association, which then united with other newspaper guilds to form the American Newspaper Guild. The first contract of the national Guild was successfully negotiated in 1934 with the Cleveland News by William Davy, executive secretary of Local #1 for its first 30 years. By 1935, the Guild had adopted the industrial-union form of organization and in 1937, Local #1 expanded to include all non-mechanical employees. By 1944, the guild included workers at the Cleveland Plain Dealer and the Catholic Universe Bulletin, followed by the Cleveland Citizen, Cleveland Union Leader, Call & Post, and others. In 1968 the Canton Repository became a unit of Local #1, and in 1969 the Massillon Evening Independent local merged with the guild. Cleveland hosted the 50th anniversary convention of the national Guild in 1983, when members voted to merge with the International Typographical Union to form the Media Workers International Union. The collection consists of minutes, notices, general office files, membership files, correspondence, financial files and newspaper clippings relating to the history, administration, and daily activities of Local #1 and its units, as well as conventions and affiliations with other locals of the American Newspaper Guild. The collection also contains files regarding Local #1's activities as part of the Cleveland and Ohio AFL-CIO, as well as awards to members of the local for merit and service towards print journalism and the American Newspaper Guild. Furthermore, there is material on several strikes Local #1 was involved in during 1946, 1956, and a 129-day strike in 1962-1963.

 Abstract:  The Cleveland Commission on Higher Education is a Cleveland, Ohio, organization of area colleges and universities which focuses on cooperative efforts and common problem solving. The group conducts studies of educational needs, develops long range objectives, and, generally, promotes higher education within the community. The commission was instrumental in the founding of Cuyahoga Community College and the transition of Fenn College to Cleveland State University. It has also been involved in projects to improve the teacher training process for secondary teachers, especially inner-city teachers. The collection consists of minutes, financial records, correspondence, memoranda, officers files, project files, subject files, and other material relating to the operation of the organization. Included are the papers of Hugh Calkins, Frank E. Joseph, and Evan A. Lloyd, officers of the commission. The collection is useful for understanding the issues and problems facing higher education in Cuyahoga County and for understanding the development of Cuyahoga Community College, as well as documenting the cooperative efforts among area institutions of higher education in developing joint programs and courses.

 Abstract:  Harry J. Dworkin was a Cleveland, Ohio, lawyer, Ohio legislator, and member of the War Labor Board, 1942-1945. Dworkin specialized in labor relations law, and was a member of the National Academy of Arbitration and the American Arbitration Association. He authored a number of articles dealing with arbitration. The collection consists of arbitration decisions made during the period 1955-1985, along with some personal correspondence, including material relating to his duties on the War Labor Board and letters to and from Willard Wirtz, as well as two journal articles written by Dworkin.

 Abstract:  Ella Grant Wilson (1854-1939) was a Cleveland, Ohio, florist, publicist, journalist and author. She was founder of the Floral Syndicate, a publicity service which promoted conventions and other activities of interest to the floral industry and was garden editor of the Plain Dealer. Her series in the Sunday Plain Dealer, focusing on historic Cleveland led to her book, "Famous old Euclid Avenue", featuring anecdotes, history and biographies relating to the homes and personalities of "Millionaires' Row." The collection consists of correspondence, reminiscences, writings, and memorabilia relating to Wilson's life and family, the floral industry, her organizational affiliations, and her book. There are also some genealogical materials relating to the Grant family. The collection is particularly useful to the study of women in business, the floral industry in Cleveland and the Midwest, and the history of Cleveland.

 Abstract:  Joseph Doherty (1889-1965) was a public relations officer for Oris P. and Mantis J. Van Sweringen, developers of the Cleveland, Ohio, suburb of Shaker Heights, and Cleveland's Terminal Tower and Union Terminal complex. The Van Sweringen brothers established a railroad empire in the 1920s which collapsed during the Depression. Doherty wrote a history of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad entitled, Smooth is the road. The collection consists of correspondence, press releases, official statements of the Van Sweringens, promotional materials for the Van Sweringen projects, including Shaker Village, Ohio, magazine articles about the Van Sweringens, newspaper clippings, and a manuscript by Doherty concerning the Van Sweringen brothers. The collection contains information relative to the Chesapeake and Ohio, Nickel Plate and Pere Marquette railroads.

 Abstract:  The Cleveland Area Leadership Study was a major research project designed to study the power base of greater Cleveland, Ohio, with emphasis on the decision-making process and the role of various community leaders. The project was supervised by Maurice Klain, professor in the Department of Political Science at Western Reserve University. The collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, interview transcripts, a subject file, questionnaires, raw data from Klain's studies on endorsements and voter tabulations, interpretative computer printouts, and newspaper clippings.

 Abstract:  James Horton was a business agent and organizer for the Building Service and Maintenance Union, Local 47, Cleveland, Ohio, who helped to unionize a number of nursing homes and served as a contract negotiator. Horton was also active in the Eddy Road Street Club, a neighborhood improvement association, and Ohio Boys Town. He was interested in political issues and wrote to a number of mayors, congressmen, and senators. The collection consists of correspondence relating to Horton's union activities, collective agreements which he helped to negotiate, material relating to the Eddy Road Street Club, letters from prominent public officials, and Horton's various awards and certificates of achievement.

 Abstract:  Frank A. Scott (1873-1949) was a Cleveland, Ohio, businessman and civic leader who was chairman of the Munitions Standards Board of the Council of National Defense and first chairman of the War Industries Board during World War I, as well as chairman of the board of Warner & Swasey Company. The collection consists of correspondence, biographical materials, diaries, personal mementos, speech texts, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, manuscripts, and the diaries of his second wife, Faith Alice Fraser Scott, and her sister, Grace Fraser Waugh. The collection is useful for understanding Scott's personal and business life, including his activities at Warner and Swasey and his work as an administrator at the War Dept. during World War I. Included among the correspondents are Samuel Mather, Theodore Burton, Newton D. Baker, Francis F. Prentiss, and Ambrose Swasey.

1897Title:  Peter Henry Kaiser Family Papers

 Abstract:  Peter Henry Kaiser (1840-1929) was a Cleveland, Ohio, lawyer who grew up in the Dutch Valley area of Tuscarawas County, Ohio. He was an amateur historian and wrote numerous short stories about his childhood home in Tuscarawas County. His second wife, Beza (Boynton) Kaiser, also wrote stories about the early history of Tuscarawas County. Their children were Ella Kaiser Carruth and John Boynton Kaiser. The collection consists of diaries of Peter Henry Kaiser, writings by various Kaiser family members, correspondence, a class roll book, an account book, genealogical notes on the Kaiser, Boynton and Culver families, newspaper clippings, a scrapbook, land records, and miscellaneous materials. The collection deals primarily with the personal lives of Peter Henry Kaiser and his family. Included are some historical materials on Tuscarawas County and three letters Peter Henry Kaiser wrote during the Civil War.

1898Title:  Clifford W. Henderson National Air Races Collection

 Abstract:  Clifford William Henderson (1895-1984) was director of the National Air Races, 1928-1939, as well as other air races and expositions. Henderson managed and promoted sporting and cultural events, expositions, and conventions in the Los Angeles area after resigning from the National Air Races. He served with honor in North Africa during World War II, and founded the community of Palm Desert, California. The collection is a comprehensive body of documentary evidence reflecting the organization and implementation of the races, consisting of press releases, letters, programs, posters, tickets, buttons, clippings, certificates and plaques. The 1928 race was held in Los Angeles, but from 1929 to 1939 most of the races were held in Cleveland. They featured cross country races, short races, army and navy maneuvers, stunt flying, parachute jumping, gliders, dirigibles, balloons and model planes and were considered a working laboratory for the aviation industry where new developments could be tested and refined. The collection is useful to the study of the races as both a popular amusement and as an aviation industry endeavor. In addition, the collection contains excellent examples of graphic design and illustration and biographical materials on various aviators.

 Abstract:  The Fisher Body Division, Plant No. 1, was a Cleveland, Ohio, automobile plant opened in 1921 as part of the Fisher Body Company, producing automobile bodies. In 1926 it became part of General Motors Corporation. During World War II the plant produced tank and gun parts and engine parts for airplanes, wartime employment totaling 14,000, including a large number of women. After the war the plant produced large stamping dies and upholstery and trim sets rather than auto bodies. GM closed the plant in 1983. The plant was involved in several bitter strikes during the 1930s, including the 1936-1937 sit-down strike to gain union recognition by GM, which began at the plant. The plant was also known as the Coit Road Plant. The collection consists of correspondence and notices, building permits and floor plans, in-house newspapers, union correspondence and notices, and union publications. There is also a large collection of newspaper clippings relating to General Motors products, labor activities, and the closing of the plant.

1900Title:  Chester Castle Bolton Papers

 Abstract:  Chester Castle Bolton (1882-1949) was a member of the United States House of Representatives from Ohio's 22nd Congressional district from 1928-1939. Bolton served previously in the Ohio State Senate from 1922-1928. During World War I, Bolton served in the Ordnance Department and the War Industries Board, and became aide to Benedict Crowell, assistant secretary of war. As a U.S. Congressman, Bolton was esteemed representative of the Great Lakes states on the Rivers and Harbors Committee, and served on the Appropriations Committee and numerous other committees. Bolton was chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee in 1934 and 1936, and helped to bring the Republican National Convention to Cleveland, Ohio in 1936. His widow, Frances Payne Bolton, succeeded him in Congress following his death in 1939. The collection consists of Army records pertaining to Bolton's service in the Ordnance Department, the War Industries Board, and attendance at the Army War College during World War I; records relating to Bolton's membership on Ohio State Senate committees (1922-1928); U.S. House of Representatives records (1928-1940), consisting of campaign files, committee files, correspondence, personal journals, material on redistricting, speeches, and service on the National Republican Congressional Committee (1932-1934); personal papers consisting of correspondence and memorials; and scrapbooks and newspaper clippings (1924-1940).
