 Abstract:  West Shore Concerts was an organization formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1949 to support, promote and develop plans and programs of good music for the West Shore communities of the Greater Cleveland area. It gives local artists and composers an opportunity to perform, presents nationally known artists, maintains an art and music center to further cultural and artistic growth, and supports students and other worthy musical organizations through scholarships and other forms of aid. The collection consists of bylaws, financial statements, minutes, correspondence, programs, lists of board and committee members, clippings, and miscellaneous organization records. The collection pertains largely to the administration of the concert series and the attempts of the board of trustees to promote musical activities on the west side of Cleveland.

 Abstract:  Miriam Cramer (1905-1980) was a well-known playwright, lecturer, teacher and fashion designer in the Cleveland, Ohio, area. She graduated from Flora Stone Mather College in 1928, then from Western Reserve University's School of Graduate Studies in 1941 after writing "More Love Brother" for her master's thesis. This musical play (included in this collection), concerning the North Union Shaker community in the 1860s, was performed at Cain Park, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, in 1945. She also studied dance with Eleanor Frampton and Martha Graham, and taught at Laurel and Cain Park schools in the Cleveland area. She was married to Sidney Andorn, but continued to use her maiden name, Miriam Cramer. The collection consists of clippings, correspondence, miscellaneous papers and publications, musical publications, research notes, scrapbook materials, speeches, and writings. The collection primarily pertains to Cramer's research on the Shaker communities in the eastern United States, including their lifestyle, religion, folklore and medicine.

 Abstract:  The Independent Mezricher Association is an organization of Cleveland, Ohio-area Jews whose origins were in Mezrich (Miedzyrzec), Poland. The association maintains cemetery plots for members, sponsors social events, maintains contact with other Mezricher groups, and contributes to projects in Israel. The collection consists of minutes, 1964-1986, correspondence, financial statements, a cemetery account book, membership lists, newspaper clippings, commemorative booklets, a constitution, and a map.

1824Title:  Former Junior Federation Records

 Abstract:  The Former Junior Federation (f. 1927) was an African American women's social club constituted of the former members of the Junior Federation in Cleveland, Ohio. It was originally called the Gertrude Fisher Club after the founder who molded a group of youngsters into an organization that gathered in each other's homes. The aims of the club were to instill an understanding of the body of culture and thought in the world, to train women to become more efficient club members and better citizens, and to promote service and philanthropy as well as social and cultural interests. In the 1950s they became members of the Council of Colored Women and renamed themselves the Junior Girls Federation. By 1965 they had again changed their name, this time to the Former Junior Federation, but continued their social, civic and friendly activities. The collection consists of a constitution, bylaws, membership rosters, minutes, financial statements, correspondence, clippings, and memorabilia.

1825Title:  Lolette and George Hanserd Papers

 Abstract:  George and Lolette Hanserd were well known in the Cleveland, Ohio, African American community for their professional contributions, respectively, in podiatry and social work. In 1952 Lolette began working for the Welfare Federation of Cleveland as a member of the Group Services Council. In 1965 she was named director of a four-year project to improve interracial and intercultural relations for the Federation, after which she became director of the Human Relations Department. In 1971 her position was expanded to include associate director of the Federation of Community Planning, the new name adopted by the Welfare Federation that same year. One year later she became the first black to be named social worker of the year by the Cleveland Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. Lolette retired from the Federation in 1984. The collection consists of Lolette's professional papers from the Federation for Community Planning, as well as some personal papers of both Lolette and George. The collection pertains primarily to Lolette Hanserd's civic activities and, to a much lesser degree, to George Hanserd's medical career in Cleveland.

 Abstract:  The Princeton Alumni Association of Northern Ohio was founded in 1905 to promote the interests of Princeton University, the association aids in alumni solicitations, helps alumni maintain contact with the university, encourages prospective applicants, and sponsors performances of the Princeton Triangle Club in Cleveland. The collection consists of constitutions, minutes, membership lists, financial records, memoranda, correspondence, notices, publications, contracts, lists of students, statements and speeches from the university, university records, and news clippings. The collection is useful to those interested in the activities of college alumni clubs or the productions of the Princeton Triangle Club and includes some correspondence relating to the admission of women to the university in the 1960s.

 Abstract:  League Park Center, Inc. (f. 1949), located in the Hough neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio, was started by the Welfare Federation of Cleveland with two social workers in the old business office of League Park (6601 Lexington Ave.), with additional facilities at nearby Dunham Church of Christ. The Center has always had close ties with the Neighborhood Settlement Association, the Center focusing on the "development of Cleveland's inner city youth," with such programs as Headstart and athletic activities. The Center's other interests included improvement of the neighborhood and encouragement of street clubs, which worked for block and street preservation and sometimes promoted youth activities. The collection consists of articles of incorporation, a code of regulations, minutes, annual reports, correspondence, legal and financial papers, project reports, memoranda, newspaper clippings, and pamphlets and posters published by the corporation.

The collection consists of ledgers, journals and registers concerning the sale of merchandise. The collection pertains to the jewelry and retail business in Cleveland and the registers detail names of purchasers and types of purchases.

1829Title:  Connecticut Land Company Miscellaneous Records

 Abstract:  The Connecticut Land Company (1795-1809) was a syndicate of 35 groups representing 58 individuals who purchased on credit the majority of Connecticut's Western Reserve land as a speculative venture. Proceeds from the sale of the Reserve were used to establish the Connecticut School Fund. The Western Reserve was that area of northeastern Ohio which Connecticut reserved for her citizens in 1786 in exchange for ceding the remainder of her western land claims to the newly-formed United States government. Settlers were slow to purchase Reserve lands, and many of the original proprietors did not make any profits due to company mismanagement. The collection consists of correspondence of Elias Perkins, Joseph Perkins, Oliver Phelps and various other interested people as well as an historical sketch of the Western Reserve lands, land records of New Lisbon, Ohio, and will and estate records. This collection pertains primarily to the efforts of company members to sell the land and settle the frontier known as Connecticut's Western Reserve.

 Abstract:  Edwin Meade Robinson (1878-1946) was a Cleveland, Ohio, poet, newspaper columnist, novelist, and lecturer who conducted Cleveland's most prestigious contributors' column, "Philosopher of Folly", in the pages of the Plain Dealer and the Cleveland Leader. "Ted" Robinson came to Cleveland in 1905 and began a column at the Cleveland Leader called "Just by the Way." He moved to the Plain Dealer in 1910, and eventually became an associate editor and the literary editor after 1922. Robinson wrote a new poem nearly every day for his column, and eventually more than 600 amateur as well as professional writers contributed to the column. Robinson published 2 volumes of verse, Mere Melodies (1918) and Pipings and Pannings (1921), and the novel Enter Jerry (1922). Throughout the 1930s, he lectured on language and philology at Cleveland College. Robinson served as president of the City Club and the American Press Humorists, and was a vice-president of the Cleveland Play House and a member of the Rowfant Club. The collection consists of letters, biographical information, published and unpublished manuscripts, speech texts, and scrapbooks, relating largely to the poetry and prose in Robinson's column, "Philosopher of Folly." The collection contains the original typescript of many of Robinson's columns and the newsprint version, 1903-1946, as well as other poetry, the typescript of a novel, lectures on language and philology, and translations of the poet Horace.

 Abstract:  The Health Fund of Greater Cleveland was incorporated by the State of Ohio on July 31, 1959, as a non-profit organization. The purpose was to consolidate and supervise solicitations for funds in the Greater Cleveland area on behalf of charitable, scientific and educational organizations engaged in the prevention of disease. The Fund was composed of six participating agencies: The Arthritis Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis, the Diabetes Association, the Hemophilia Foundation, the Kidney Association, and the Muscular Disease Society. The Fund dissolved in September 1977, and its remaining assets were divided among the six participating agencies. The Health Council of United Torch Services assumed the duties of the Fund in 1977. The collection consists of minutes of the governing bodies, correspondence, monthly and annual financial reports, and subject files.

 Abstract:  Maurice E. Van Metre (1895-1970) was a popular Cleveland, Ohio, journalist who served as theater and radio-television critic and gossip columnist for the Cleveland News and suburban Sun newspapers. During World War II, he published "The Dirt at the News", a monthly newsletter for Cleveland members of the armed forces, which included the whereabouts and experiences of Cleveland servicemen, especially 120 former News employees. The collection consists almost entirely of letters to Van Metre from friends and former co-workers who subscribed to The Dirt at the News. These letters represent a portion of those Van Metre compiled and edited into his entertaining miniature newspaper and include letters from many well-known persons, providing insights into the war-time experiences of servicemen at home, as well as the battlefront. Also included are some printed materials relating to Van Metre and his newsletter.

 Abstract:  Frank Lyons (1894-1974) was a lawyer, politician and civic leader active in Cleveland, Ohio's African American community. The collection consists of correspondence dealing with Lyons' law career, political involvement, and personal life, as well as organizational records, political campaign files, appointment books and journals, and legal case materials, including discrimination suits Lyons handled for the Future Outlook League and Robert Woodall. The collection pertains to Lyons' political aspirations and activities in various ward clubs, his community service in such organizations as the Urban League, St. Marks Presbyterian Church, and the Woodland Center Neighborhood House, and his discrimination cases.

 Abstract:  The 171st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company E, was an American Civil War regiment mustered in May 7, 1864 and mustered out Aug. 20, 1864. The regiment fought at Kelly's Bridge against General Morgan. The collection consists of four volumes of military ledgers, listing names, descriptions, and rank of the company's men, official and special orders, activities engaged in, and clothing issued during their service.

 Abstract:  Reverend Edward Worthington was pastor of Grace Episcopal Church in Cleveland, Ohio, during the latter part of the nineteenth century. His wife, Eleanor Lobdell Worthington, was the daughter of Dr. Francis Lobdell, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church and once archdeacon of the Episcopal Diocese of Western New York. The collection consists of various personal and professional letters of the Worthington family, and other individuals, as well as genealogical charts of the Lobdell family, newspaper clippings, and clipped autographs. The collection is largely personal in nature, being primarily correspondence between family members. A large portion is the correspondence of Eleanor Worthington and deals mainly with family and domestic issues. The Edward Worthington correspondence is also primarily of a personal nature, with some official church and business letters. Several of the letters relate to the courtship of Edward and Eleanor.
