 Abstract:  The Cleveland Printing and Graphic Communications Union, Local No. 56, was chartered in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1891 as the Cleveland Printing and Pressmen's Union, No. 56. It became the Cleveland Printing Pressmen's and Assistants Union, Local No. 56, in 1929, after merging with the Cleveland Pressmen's Assistants Union, Local No. 45. The present name was adopted after a merger in 1973 with the Stereotypers and Electrotypers International. The collection consists of constitutions, histories, minutes, grievances, agreements, proceedings of conventions, and correspondence.

 Abstract:  The Slovenian Benefit Society Slovenija is an independent Slovene-American benefit society formed ca. 1895 in Cleveland, Ohio, by a splinter group from Marijn Spolek, the first Slovenian lodge in the city. It provided insurance and organized both the first Slovenian men's chorus (Zora) and a gymnastics group which developed into the Slovenian Sokol (Slovenski Sokol). The collection consists of bylaws, minute books, account books, membership books, a ledger book, and a dues book.

 Abstract:  The Slovenian National Home is a meeting place for Slovene-American social, cultural, political and athletic groups in Cleveland, Ohio. It was built in 1923-24 with funds raised by the Slovene National Benefit Society and houses the Slovenian National Library, a sokol gymnasium, meeting rooms and an auditorium. The collection consists of minutes, financial records, correspondence, membership rolls, stock certificates, and programs of the home. Includes minutes, resolutions, stock certificates, musical scores, scripts, newspaper clippings, and other papers of organizations that used the home.

 Abstract:  The Slovene National Benefit Society (Slovenska Narodna Podporna Jednota) is a socialist-oriented fraternal insurance society. It was founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1904 and has several branches in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1941 it absorbed another fraternal insurance society, the Slovene Progressive Benefit Society (Slovenske Svobodomiselne Zveze). The collection consists of constitutions, bylaws, minutes, account books, ledger books, membership rolls, dues books, sickness and hospital benefit records, funeral service records, and publications of the national society and four of its lodges in Cleveland, Ohio. Includes minutes of Lodge 120 of the Slovene Progressive Benefit Society (1919-1941).

 Abstract:  Luis Martinez, a native of Puerto Rico, Martinez lived in Lorain, Ohio, for much of his youth. In 1981, Cleveland Mayor George Voinovich appointed him as Hispanic Liaison for the city of Cleveland. He served in that capacity until 1986. The collection consists of minutes and a history of the Spanish American Committee of Cleveland, correspondence, news releases, mailing lists, and clippings. This collection pertains largely to the Hispanic Community and includes material on bilingual education in Cleveland Public Schools, San Juan Bautista Church, Jose Feliciano and various social issues in Cleveland during the years 1975-1986.

The collection consists of correspondence and printed materials on civil defense, schedules and printed materials for the Cleveland Hiking Club, Cuyahoga County Board of Elections correspondence and appointment notices, and war ration books. This collection pertains primarily to civil defense in Cleveland Heights and the activities of the Cleveland Hiking Club.

 Abstract:  The Cleveland Colony of the Society of Mayflower Descendants (f. 1930) was organized by Mrs. Walter D. Meals as a colony of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Ohio. The activities of the colony include genealogical research on descendants of Mayflower passengers and distributing copies of the Mayflower Compact in schools. Membership is open to any proven descendant of a Mayflower passenger. The collection consists of a history of the colony, a petition for its charter, constitutions, minutes, membership data, genealogical information on members, reports, bulletins, financial records, information on events, correspondence, copies of addresses, scrapbooks, writings, newspaper clippings, reports of colony organizations, and miscellaneous documents. This collection is useful for those interested in the activities of the Society of Mayflower Descendants and of patriotic societies in general.  Abstract:  The Acker family descended from Peter Acker, Sr. (1730-1815), a German immigrant who, with his wife Jane Sutherland (born ca. 1752), settled in New Jersey prior to the Revolutionary War and then moved into South Carolina late in the 18th century. Family members later moved into Alabama, New York, and then Ohio where they settled in the Cleveland area prior to 1928. The collection consists of a diary, autograph album, correspondence, and memorabilia for several of the descendants; correspondence, publications, sketches, records, and index cards relating to the compilation of the family genealogy by George Haigh Acker. This collection pertains primarily to the genealogy of the Acker family and related branches, including John Rolfe and Pocahontas, as well as the Haigh, Halbert, and McDavid families.

 Abstract:  Frederick A. Van Fleet (1874-1952) was a business writer and editor for numerous magazines and newspapers in Michigan and Ohio from 1890 until 1928. In 1928 he became public relations counsel for the Peerless Motor Car Company of Cleveland, Ohio. Van Fleet was also active in the Society of Mayflower Descendants. The collection consists of magazine and newspaper articles written by Van Fleet relating to business and industry in the U.S., correspondence, copies of other magazine articles, newspaper clippings, a guest list from the Society of Mayflower Descendants, membership certificates, and a biography of Van Fleet's son, Frederick McKay Van Fleet. The collection is useful for those interested in Van Fleet and his conservative economic philosophy regarding U.S. industry. Included is Van Fleet's article proposing an industrial museum for Cleveland, Ohio, honoring Cleveland's role as the heart of mass production in America.

 Abstract:  Benjamin F. Wade, an Ashtabula County, Ohio, lawyer and zealous abolitionist, was one of the foremost Radical Republican United States Senators of the American Civil War. Wade demanded that Lincoln make the war a crusade to free the slaves, and he led the charge to keep control of Reconstruction in the hands of Congress. His family, descended from Jonathan Wade, a 1632 immigrant to Massachusetts, was one of the most prominent families of Ashtabula County during the 19th century. The first of the family to settle in Ashtabula County was James Wade, father of Benjamin, who arrived there in the 1820s. The collection consists of correspondence, wedding invitations, genealogy notes, newspaper clippings, and a freight receipt. The collection pertains to the views of Radical Republicans during the early stages of the Civil War. Caroline Wade's letter strongly expresses her (and probably her husband's) negative views of President Abraham Lincoln and General George B. McClellan. The genealogical material is also useful for information on the Wade family of the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the families of Dudley, Newhall, Hills, Upham, Wigglesworth, and Leonard.

 Abstract:  Cesko-Slovanske podporujici spolky ve Spojenych Statech (Czecho-Slavonic Benevolent Society, was a mutual benefit association founded in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1870. Its early members served in the Union army during the American Civil War. Initially, benefits were paid to dependents of men killed in the war. The first Cleveland, Ohio, branch was the third branch of the national organization, and by 1919, 23 branches were located in the city. The national organization was headed by a supreme lodge which had 11 Grand Lodges beneath it. Cleveland was the seat of the Ohio Grand Lodge, which at one point had 31 individual lodges with 3,400 members under its charge. The Czecho-Slavonic Benevolent Society minute book, 1882-1893, consists of a single volume of the Ohio Grand Lodge. The collection is useful for understanding the activities of a late 19th century Czech benevolent society.

 Abstract:  The Polish American Congress, Ohio Division, is part of the larger organization which was formed in Buffalo, New York, in 1944 with the purpose of securing Polish independence in Europe and improving the status of Polish-Americans in the United States. It opposed the Yalta and Potsdam agreements. The Ohio Division, which had branches in Toledo and Youngstown, as well as Cleveland, had a political action commission which endorsed candidates and aided Polish candidates, promoted Polish language classes, and started the observance of Polish Constitution Day on May 3rd. At one point, it had over 500 members. The collection consists of news releases, reports, bulletins, correspondence, and newspaper clippings. Much of the material relates to the visit by Bishop Julian Groblicki of Poland to Cleveland. This collection is useful to understanding some of the activities and political views of the Polish American Congress, particularly toward communist governments in Eastern Europe.
