Membership is open to any proven descendant of a Mayflower passenger. Van Fleet (1874-1952) was a business writer and editor for numerous magazines and newspapers in Michigan and Ohio from 1890 until 1928. In 1928 he became public relations counsel for the Peerless Motor Car Company of Cleveland, Ohio. Van Fleet was also active in the Society of Mayflower Descendants. The collection consists of magazine and newspaper articles written by Van Fleet relating to business and industry in the U.S., correspondence, copies of other magazine articles, newspaper clippings, a guest list from the Society of Mayflower Descendants, membership certificates, and a biography of Van Fleet's son, Frederick McKay Van Fleet. The collection is useful for those interested in Van Fleet and his conservative economic philosophy regarding U.S. industry. Wade, an Ashtabula County, Ohio, lawyer and zealous abolitionist, was one of the foremost Radical Republican United States Senators of the American Civil War. Wade demanded that Lincoln make the war a crusade to free the slaves, and he led the charge to keep control of Reconstruction in the hands of Congress. His family, descended from Jonathan Wade, a 1632 immigrant to Massachusetts, was one of the most prominent families of Ashtabula County during the 19th century. The first of the family to settle in Ashtabula County was James Wade, father of Benjamin, who arrived there in the 1820s. The collection consists of correspondence, wedding invitations, genealogy notes, newspaper clippings, and a freight receipt. The collection pertains to the views of Radical Republicans during the early stages of the Civil War. Caroline Wade's letter strongly expresses her (and probably her husband's) negative views of President Abraham Lincoln and General George B. McClellan. Its early members served in the Union army during the American Civil War. Initially, benefits were paid to dependents of men killed in the war. The first Cleveland, Ohio, branch was the third branch of the national organization, and by 1919, 23 branches were located in the city. The national organization was headed by a supreme lodge which had 11 Grand Lodges beneath it. Cleveland was the seat of the Ohio Grand Lodge, which at one point had 31 individual lodges with 3,400 members under its charge. The Czecho-Slavonic Benevolent Society minute book, 1882-1893, consists of a single volume of the Ohio Grand Lodge. | | | Creator: | Polish American Congress, Ohio Division | | | Dates: | 1970-1977 | | | Abstract: | The Polish American Congress, Ohio Division, is part of the larger organization which was formed in Buffalo, New York, in 1944 with the purpose of securing Polish independence in Europe and improving the status of Polish-Americans in the United States. It opposed the Yalta and Potsdam agreements. The Ohio Division, which had branches in Toledo and Youngstown, as well as Cleveland, had a political action commission which endorsed candidates and aided Polish candidates, promoted Polish language classes, and started the observance of Polish Constitution Day on May 3rd. At one point, it had over 500 members. The collection consists of news releases, reports, bulletins, correspondence, and newspaper clippings. Much of the material relates to the visit by Bishop Julian Groblicki of Poland to Cleveland.
