Samuel was one of the first white children born in Painesville, Ohio. In 1844 he married Hulda O. Ford (d. 1857), daughter of Darius Ford, one of the first settlers of East Cleveland. In 1849 Mathews traveled to California with his partners in the Painesville Mining Company. He returned home in 1852. | | | Creator: | Healy, John | | | Dates: | 1838-1932 | | | Abstract: | John Healy (b. 1805) was a pioneer of Newburgh, Ohio, who operated the town's only general store and was a deacon and clerk of the Miles Avenue Church of Christ, where James A. Garfield was pastor. During the American Civil War Healy's son, John Sullivan (1842-1908), fought in the Seventh Ohio Volunteer Infantry, while his other son, Edson E. (1844-1932), worked with the United States Commissary Department. They were both captured at New Creek, West Virginia in 1864 and imprisoned at Castle Thunder in Richmond. They were released in 1865, on exchange, through the efforts of Julia Wheeler who later married John S. Healy. Edson E. Healy married Esther Taylor in 1869. Their three children were John Egbert (Bert), Bruce Zarah, and Cecil Taylor. The Healys remained in the family business until their retirement at the beginning of the twentieth century. The collection consists of family correspondence, seven letters from James A. | | | Creator: | Olstyn, Stanley | | | Dates: | 1910-1970 | | | Abstract: | Stanley Olstyn was (1889-1972) was a Cleveland, Ohio, resident who worked for his father at the Olstyn Carriage Company, 1908-1917, organized the Washington Savings Bank in 1920 (which was later merged into the Guardian Trust Company) and became a realtor in 1941. Olstyn founded the Home Owners Protective League in 1937 as a lobby group for efficient government and lower taxes and became very vocal in the battle against higher taxes and increased welfare spending. He was also active in many Polish-American groups, including the Cleveland Society of Poles, the Harmonia Chopin Polish Singing Society, and Marymount Hospital. The collection consists of a time and payroll book for the Olstyn Carriage Company, 1910-1914, newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous printed materials. The clippings highlight Olstyn's real estate career and his battles with city government over taxes. The first Cleveland, Ohio, branch, No. 79, was organized in 1904. The Cleveland branch provides insurance, operates a cemetery, teaches Yiddish classes, and has supported such issues as unionizing the Cleveland garment industry, child labor laws, social security, civil rights, and fighting Soviet anti-semitism. In 1975, there were six branches in Cleveland, with a school, the Workmen's Circle Educational Center, located on South Green Road. He was active in numerous Jewish organizations, including The Temple. The collection consists of a family genealogy, correspondence, legal documents, tributes, memorabilia, and clippings. The correspondence consists mainly of expressions of thanks and congratulations to and from Neumark, but also includes some letters relating to the Jewish Community Federation and The Temple.
